The story began on a promising note, drawing me in with its intriguing start. However, my enthusiasm fell as I came to realize what a self-centered and unrealistic character Heather turned out to be. The narration, on the other hand, was exceptional, with all three narrators delivering fantastic performances.

One of the major issues I had with the book was Heather's prolonged blame game towards Libby for Gus's tragic death. I expected Heather to undergo personal growth, acknowledging her role in the accident as the nanny. Neither she nor Gus could swim, and as an adult, she should have accepted responsibility for not learning to swim herself and for not supervising the boys around water. It was clear that a mother would instinctively save her children, but Heather's lack of responsibility as a caretaker troubled me.

Heather's irrational hatred for Sky and her ignorance about mental health issues were difficult to swallow. She believed that Burke wouldn't love Sky because of her OCD and hatched a plan to sabotage Sky's life to collect money she had declined 30 years ago. Her refusal to take responsibility for tearing up the $500k check she received back then was infuriating. Ironically, she seemed more mature as a teenager than as an adult, coming across as a rather pitiful character. The book might have been more compelling if Heather had been unaware of Burke's affair with Sky, or if their paths had crossed coincidentally.

As someone diagnosed with OCD in my early twenties, I empathized with Sky's struggle. However, I wish the author had explored her journey of overcoming OCD throughout the book, perhaps through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) therapy. This would have made her character stronger, more relatable, and more likable. The ending seemed to imply that her OCD miraculously disappeared overnight, which doesn't accurately reflect how this condition typically evolves.

It was confusing and I thought it would make sense at the end and I’m still confused

I kept debating if I should listen to the book. The narration was not great but something I was able to get over. This book started out with so much potential. Many of the characters in the story didn’t have a point. I think the writer did this to keep us guessing and it did keep us guessing but it was all over the place and it didn’t flow at all. There was no tie or point to characters that were introduced when you get to the end. The ending is completely unrealistic and Kate must have been living in la la land to not know what was going on.

This was a good book. Kept me interested from the beginning until she continued to prosecute and have coffee after her son went missing? I thought maybe I missed something and it was a flashback? But no. Just didn’t seem plausible.
