Cute concept, poor execution

I love a good cozy mystery and was thrilled to find a book with older main characters, but this book was a disappointment. My first issue is that this is listed as the first in a series, but it's clearly a spin-off from another series. The characters are constantly referencing events from the past with little to no context for new readers and there are apparent long-established relationships between many of the characters that are never explained or fleshed out. I would expect that from a book that occurs later in an established series, but not one that's listed as Book One.
Then the author used dialogue to convey a lot of information to the reader, which leads to a lot of stilted and unnatural sounding dialogue. This was only made worse by the narrator's delivery of the dialogue. Since the story is told in first person, I expected the main character's voice for her inner monologue as she narrated the story and her outer dialogue when she spoke to other characters to match. At least a little. Instead the narrator chose to make them two very distinct voices. This was both jarring and, at times, confusing. And most of her other voice choices were questionable at best. I imagine this is what it would sound like if I attempted to narrate an audiobook myself.

Ugh! Who knew there was a book out there that could make me hate mer-people?
At first I thought it was the narrator's delivery that was the problem. Her pacing and tone were all over the place and she had some odd-to-me pronunciations that were distracting and kept me wondering more about her accent than about the story. About half way though the book I noticed I was rolling my eyes pretty much every time the main character opened her mouth, and it was then that I realized it wasn't just the narrator. There's a decent premise here, but the behavior of most of the characters makes little sense in the grand scheme of things, and it's hard to care about character you find shallow and annoying.
And two things I borderline despise in a book were both present and accounted for:
1. Insta-love that no one seems to even question. We've been having dreams about each other since we were children and we're both hot mer-people, so obviously we're soul mates meant to be together forever, and I will put my college career on hold while I wait for you to graduate high school. Ew!
2. Clueless people who are suddenly all powerful, without having to do any real work to learn to control said powers and who also play some key role that everyone knows about but them. "The Link"? Seriously?
Maybe if I had been surprised by a single "revelation" in the story, I could offer up an extra star in the rating. But then again, probably not.

Historia
Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, 15-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two. But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return.

I purchased this book knowing nothing about the author, narrator, or series, but because it was on sale. I am so happy that I did. I'm not a huge fan of YA books, but this one was quite well done. The narrator does a great job of conveying the emotions of the characters. The best thing about this book was the twist the author threw in. I thought I saw where she was going with the story, but I completely underestimated her. I was as shocked and surprised as the main character. I highly recommend this one to fans of werewolves and YA lit.
