Fantastic story and reading
Revisado: 12-29-24
Love how the author is able to explain Saxon culture from clothing, to food to warfare while creating characters as fragile and human as they most likely were. The reading and performance of the book is also amazing.

Historia
A country left in ruins after the fall of the Roman Empire is plundered and broken. Saxon hordes have invaded and conquered the East coast of Britain in a blood-soaked Great War which tore the old kingdoms apart. From Bernicia to Kent, land and kingdoms are now under Saxon rule. But these new conquerors want more…Britain's remaining kingdoms are jaded by the constant threat of war, their Kings old, alliances fickle and frayed. It seems Britain must fall enslaved to the brutal and marauding conquerors from across the sea.

Historia
"Empire" carries huge historical baggage, but America is undeniably an imperial superpower - and yet all empires must end. Whether the US collapses swiftly from internal and external pressures, or declines and dissolves more peacefully over several centuries, depends on what its citizens and leaders do today. The present moment has never been more perilous. Written from a sympathetic and non-partisan perspective, this book addresses the current climate as the country gears up for the 2024 presidential election.

Overall it was compelling and good
Revisado: 12-06-24
While I did not always agree with some of the portrayals of events, the book does make a compelling case that change is needed in the American empire, or like all empires before it, it is doomed. I am not as optimistic as the author nor do I believe that keeping the empire together is necessarily a must, especially for its own citizens. However the author was very convincing that the alternative, right now to the American empire, is far worse. Overall this is well worth a listen as it’s well researched and provides a cautionary tale that we heed or ignore at our own expense.

Historia
Queen Elizabeth II’s death ruptured the already-fractured foundations of the House of Windsor—and dismantled the protective shield around it. With an institution long plagued by antiquated ideas around race, class and money, the monarchy and those who prop it up are now exposed and at odds with a rapidly modernizing world.

Loved it
Revisado: 01-01-24
Loved the earnest unflinching view of the coming end game. It is clear that the monarchy has become a game to many inside and around its stale existence. Unless this is turned around and a more modern approach is ushered in, a negative end game will not be far off. The story was well told and narrated.

Historia
Today’s Republican party is not a “normal” political party in the American tradition. It has become an autocratic movement masquerading as a political party. As Stuart Stevens argues in The Conspiracy to End America, if we look away from that truth, we greatly increase the likelihood that the America we love will slip away, never to return.

Scary reality but we have been warned
Revisado: 11-05-23
Well written and read book. We all do not have to agree on everything but at least we should agree with what passes for news or not. Stuart is masterful in explaining, without glee, how the republicans are a lost cause. I agree with his arguments overall including the most important one: No one is coming to save us from the GOP push to autocracy. We Americans must do it for ourself and defeat Trump and trumpism now.

Historia
Empire of the Normans tells the extraordinary story of how the descendants of Viking marauders in northern France came to dominate European, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern politics. It is a tale of ambitious adventures and fierce pirates, of fortunes made and fortunes lost. Across the generations, the Normans made their influence felt across Western Europe and the Mediterranean, from the British Isles to North Africa, and even to the Holy Land, with a combination of military might, political savvy, deeply held religious beliefs, and a profound sense of their own destiny.

Great story and great reading
Revisado: 07-15-23
This book was enjoyable because it broke done the complex world the Normans made into edible bits. The Normans were everywhere and nowhere in Europe and the Mediterranean but the author deftly showed how they made their mark on their world and even ours. The reading was very good as well. It strongly supported the story of the author.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Harry shows himself to be sensitive, traumatized but hopeful. He has the right to tell his story, for his children and family, he has a duty to do so. As his family in the U.K. only understands the medium of tabloid media, this is Harry’s best chance to give balance to those who would destroy him, for money, or to simply deflect eyes away from their own “sins.”

Historia
As one of the strategists behind the famous 2012 RNC “autopsy,” Miller conducts his own forensic study on the pungent carcass of the party he used to love, cutting into all the hubris, ambition, idiocy, desperation, and self-deception for everyone to see. In a bracingly honest reflection on both his own past work for the Republican Party and the contortions of his former peers in the GOP establishment, Miller draws a straight line between the actions of the 2000s GOP to the Republican political class's Trumpian takeover, including the horrors of January 6th.

Historia
The novel and fiery thesis of Break It Up is simple: the United States has never lived up to its name - and never will. The disunionist impulse may have found its greatest expression in the Civil War, but as Break It Up shows, the seduction of secession wasn't limited to the South or the 19th century. With a scholar's command and a journalist's curiosity, Kreitner takes readers on a revolutionary journey through American history, revealing the power and persistence of disunion movements in every era and region.

Crystallized many thoughts I had over decades
Revisado: 10-11-20
The work is clear, well sourced, and explains in details why we always seem to be at war with ourselves. It asks important questions, such as, what is our nation worth? It also shows that some of our idle thoughts that the nation is not worth all of this friction, chaos, and at times violence, has been often pondered since the conception of the nation. We are not United. We have never been United. This books shows us why and allows us to think of writing a new chapter for this American continent in the future.
