Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

One of the few non-fans
Revisado: 01-10-19
When I see a book with over 20k 5 star reviews I feel pretty confident that I will be getting a book that is outstanding. I read the synopsis of the book, put it on my wishlist, then finally purchased it about 9 months ago. The first time I listened to it I was on a walk and about an hour later I realized that I was lost in my own thoughts -- meaning the book did not catch my attention. I shelved it for a bit, but after continuing to see so much praise for this book I decided to give it another chance, being mindful of paying attention. Well, I am about 2/3 through and while the story is interesting, it is FAR from captivating or unfortunately, very shocking. It's written with very little emotion, more so of stating the facts type story. I suppose if this is how Tara perceived her upbringing, not all that emotionally and physically abusive, then so be it, even so, it needs more depth. I want to finish it, but I am in no rush.

We all sit on the edge of a mystery. We have only known this life, so dying scares us - and we are all dying. But what if dying were perfectly safe? What if you could approach dying with curiosity and love? What if dying were the ultimate spiritual practice? Walking Each Other Home: Conversations on Loving and Dying reunites lifelong friends Ram Dass and Mirabai Bush, who speak on the spiritual opportunities in the dying process. They share intimate personal experiences and timeless practices for every aspect of this journey.

Outlier
Revisado: 12-24-18
Wow, I'm definitely an outlier here. I could not handle this book. I'm not sure if it was the narrator, or the hodgepodge format of the story telling. I have listened to many books one death/dying and have enjoyed them all, but this one was a huge disappointment. Walking Each Other Home left me irritated and waiting for something of substance to happen.

Good, but not great

I can't say exactly what it is about the story that I don't particularly like -- I suppose some of the chapters just go on for too long and or lack substance.

Historia
The emotional trauma we suffer as children not only shapes our emotional lives as adults but also affects our physical health and overall well-being. Scientists now know on a biochemical level exactly how parents' chronic fights, divorce, death in the family, being bullied or hazed, and growing up with a hypercritical, alcoholic, or mentally ill parent can leave permanent, physical "fingerprints" on our brains.

Excellent, narrator mispronounces many words
Revisado: 11-21-18
As all of the other reviews have stated this book is a must read/listen. However, I was often distracted by the multiple times the narrator mispronounced anatomical words. Perhaps due to the fact that I have a medical background it bothers me more than others; many listeners probably didn't even know she was saying words incorrectly. Other than that the performance was good.

You get ready to die the way you get ready for a trip. Start by realizing you don't know the way. Listen to a few travel guides. Study the language, look at maps, gather equipment. Let yourself imagine what it will be like. Pack your bags. This book is one of those travel guides - a guide to preparing for your own death and the deaths of people close to you. The fact of death is hard to believe. Sallie Tisdale explores our fears and all the ways death and talking about death make us uncomfortable - but she also explores its intimacies and joys.

Interesting, but not amazing
Revisado: 11-14-18
I appreciate the authors perspective on death -- the first 2/3 of the book were pretty good, but I started to lose interest after that. That said, I do recommend it to someone who is caring for a loved one who is dying.

Thank you for your vulnerability!
Revisado: 09-24-18
Thank you for sharing your journey through addiction. Some reviews say this is just about an over privileged spoiled girl. While her family may have had money, it does not make her story any less important. In fact, it highlights that addiction crosses all socioeconomic classes. This is an important story that was told and needed to be told.

Hard to take in, but necessary
Revisado: 08-25-18
The story of June's life is absolutely horrifying. Thankfully I have never been in a abusive relationship; I wasn't even spanked as a child, so violence does not register for me as a means to expressing inner turmoil. I had (up until a few years ago) been one of those women thinking, "Why doesn't she just leave him?" or that I would not have let the abuse start in the first place because there HAD to have been red flags in the earlier stages of the relationship. But are listening to this story I now see how complex it really is. I thank June for sharing her story, but I wonder where she is now. How have the past few years been for her?

Revisado: 08-01-18
My headline says it all. This is a must read/listen for everyone. One warning though, there is talk of God in the book, however, it is not, at least in my opinion used in a religious sense (I'm agnostic) . So if the word God turns you off, just know you will hear it, but keep an open mind. I am grateful that I did.
