Eye opening

Superb reading of one of the most useful histories I’ve come across. The Mark of a master teacher is that the student becomes hungry to learn more, to apply the lessons learned, to pass on useful knowledge. This book accomplishes just that. I look forward to re-reading this!

Vital (living and necessary) prayer

Highly organized, cogent, concise, yet eminently readable. Scholarly, yet pastoral. Rather than brow-beating the prayer-less, motivated by making much of God and his grace. Good re-read value.

A master writer and a masterful reader

Exceptional performance of a well-written story. Once again, period and nautical detail provide a firm foundation for what is, at heart, an examination of the human condition. Warfare? Yes, but the primary focus is on relationships: friendship, master and servant, international intrigue and the life of the spy.

Worthwhile story

As a child, I read various accounts of WWII and was inspired. As an adult, this account amazes me. Ambrose captures the events of history without histrionics, yet honors the courage and sacrifice of the Allied nations in a way that acknowledges flaws, but celebrates the praiseworthy.

My entitled generation could profit from their example, and from reading this book.

Weir’s book is well written: plausible research, good timing, a breathless adrenaline rush. Wheaton is one of the best readers I’ve ever heard. I’ll be looking for him in the future.

A step back

Terry Pratchett’s story keeps bringing me back, but Stephen Briggs’ performance was Pratchett’s voice. This new version lacks continuity and the life that Briggs consistently bright to each performance. Briggs loved Pratchett’s work. This cast seems to be merely doing a job.

I wish I could have Briggs back.

Well written and well read, captures your interest from the beginning and keeps it to the end. Not just about sailing or tall ships. The interaction with history, explanation of terms and practical demonstrations of teamwork and personal growth make this not just entertaining, but educational. This book is worth reading and re-reading.

To teach history successfully requires a love of that subject, a mastery of its details and the ability to pass both the information and the passion for the subject to the student. This series of lectures wins the Triple Crown for accomplishing all three. I’m ready to head to Spain to experience it for myself!

A well- researched and written work that carefully distinguishes between what we know and what we think we know. The narrator was superb. While I’ll look for more works by Livingston, I definitely want to hear more read by Farley.
