For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

I absolutely LOVED the characters. I enjoyed the story so much I found myself listening even when I’d normally be watching tv. Can’t wait to start book 2.

Historia
It’s been 10 years since a group of college friends made a vow: that the first to get rich would rent a boat and invite the others on a cruise. Now, the friends find themselves marooned at a luxurious hotel on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. While their boat is being repaired, they can’t help but observe the daily routine of a fellow hotel guest - a mysterious, white-bearded stranger who sits on the veranda each night and smokes one cigarette, sometimes two.

Disturbing and confusing
Revisado: 10-02-20
I agree with @patricia from Portland. It has disturbing undertones and stalker tendencies. Although written in a very romantic fashion in a calming voice, the story itself revealed these lovers had nothing but contempt for each other.
It romanticized what seemed to be passionate hatred, so—this is a bit extreme but—it felt a bit like a rapist fooling himself into thinking the woman is into it (she was angry and irritated with him most of the story).
I continued to listen to the very end because (1) I wanted a calming “read” to fall asleep to, (2) I couldn’t wrap my head around whether the story was about past lives or something completely different, (3) and what seemed a dichotomy between the calming performance juxtaposed against the disturbing undertones—stalking, hating each other, fighting, unwelcome sexual touching—suggested a sinister ending, so kept listening to figure it out.
Most frustrating is how they never explain how he can tell the future and knows intimate details of other’s lives, and how it’s even relevant and important to the storyline.
Overall, it’s confusing and a bit disturbing. But if you need something to help put you to sleep, this should do the trick.

Journalists show too much bias
Revisado: 09-15-20
The journalists show too much bias, both during the actual interviews—a big no no if you want people to open up—and then during their discussions together on the topic. They were judgmental, which is understandable for the audience to be, but shouldn’t be shown so outwardly by the journalists themselves.
I couldn’t get past their slight holier-than-thou attitude. Because of it, I wasn’t able to form my own opinions, making this more of an op-Ed than real journalism.
Having said that, had they been able to keep their opinions to themselves, the story itself was fascinating. They had 121 interviews with the collectors and sellers. It was interesting to try and get into the COLLECTOR’S head—just as they tried to get into the KILLER’S head by collecting/selling—to try and understand why they wanted to collect such terrifying items, and even befriend these killers.
But alas, I won’t listen to the rest of the podcast because their opinions got in the way of the story.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

A book you can get lost in!
Revisado: 08-30-20
Never have a read something as outrageously creative a story as this. It’s a world where “breathes” are like a type of currency and lifeblood, and “colors” can be seen as vanity and used as a curse word. There are gods who are worshipped but are for all intents and purposes still human, and a God as our society thinks of one.
In terms of engaging storyline and otherworldly creations, this is the best book by Sanderson. May be his best book of his ever. But I know all the rest I’ve read are amazing so can’t pick a favorite.
If you’d like to be transported to an entirely new and bizarre world, and get lost in the most fascinating story for an extended period of time (I love that his books are long!) then pick this one up.

How did he withstand that kind of pressure?!
Revisado: 08-21-20
Wow. I learned about this story through articles and exposes so didn’t think this would give anything new, but his first hand account was riveting and I’m beyond shocked he was able to withstand that amount of pressure. What happened with his grandfather not sticking by him was heartbreaking.
He gives an inside look into his state of mind throughout the events that spanned YEARS.
Tyler, never could I ever have withstood the pressures you did. And that level of commitment to what’s right no matter what the consequences is inspiring. I’m so impressed. Thank you for sharing. Wow.

A perfect escape & gripping tale that kept me riveted
Revisado: 07-16-20
I MISS great authors. And when it’s an audible book an author has to be double as talented, because we’re easily distracted, and they’re at the mercy of a narrator who can make or break their storyline.
THIS author keeps me engaged. I desperately need mini escapes throughout the day, and I rarely find an audible book that gets me but this does. Great characters who grip you, storylines that kept me up until 2am, and plots that seem inconsequential all come together in the end with a neat and tidy bow! Dervla, you’re my new favorite mystery author. Thank YOU!
The main characters are policemen/women/detectives so I’m surprised readers take issues with some foul language. It fits perfectly with the character’s personalities, and I didn’t notice it personally...and I don’t really use much foul language. Bottom line: Don’t let that stop you.
And yeah there are a LOT of characters, but it motivated me to engage deeper because the story gripped me and I didn’t want to miss anything f. I found myself rewinding to get everyone straight.
As someone with a family history of Alzheimer’s, I’m not beating up the author for making me think critically. And this too-many-character thing is only an issue with audiobooks. Hopefully Audible will start including a booklet with the characters.

Dr Jekyll, a charming doctor explores the possibility of dividing the dark and light side of her personality, but in doing this she creates a monster, Eleanor Hyde. For many years she manages to live under the radar, keeping her dark secret unknown to those around her. However, gradually her evil side gains strength until Dr Jekyll is overwhelmed by Eleanor Hyde, to disastrous consequences. An exploration of human duality and forces of good and evil, this modern retelling is compelling and eerie and retains the disturbing nature of the original text.

Revisado: 06-24-20
I was fully immersed immediately. It’s been a long time since that happened and I listen to audible, and read everyday. The very end it got a little over the top with all the shock and awe, but overall a great story, amazing performances and memorable listening.

For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

How cute, delightful and entertaining!
Revisado: 05-27-20
The devil-may-care, lackadaisical, modern narration by someone with such an adorable no-nonsense voice of a young girl, juxtaposed by the age-old story of good vs evil set in a magical world made this an enjoyable listen. It was shorter than most books in this genre so the action never lulled. And like the unconventional narration, the ending was heartwarming and unexpected as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
