Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Wonderful Historical Fiction
Revisado: 10-07-23
I really enjoyed this novel. The author weaved such an incredible story with a well developed protagonist and antagonist and plot that did not disappoint with suspense, conflict, and triumph. Great historical fiction if you appreciate and can digest the unfiltered depiction of the ugliness power, slavery, colorism, and sexism. I’m still thinking about the brutality but happy to have had the experience of reading/listening and appreciating the perseverance and the love Phoebe had for her children.

Maybe the Show is Better
Revisado: 09-29-23
I’m really not sure where to begin with this review. The novel lacked both plot and character development that left so many unanswered questions for me. The plot has potential but the writing fell short. I was disappointed in the ending as well. I’m hoping the show is better.

Entertaining
Revisado: 05-17-23
It was entertaining with very little depth and a bit too predictable for me in places. I’m a fan of the narrators and they did not disappoint.

Bad Decisions
Revisado: 03-20-23
Sometimes people make bad decisions, it’s called life. This book is full of people making bad decisions. If you want a feel good story, this isn’t for you. I found myself so frustrated with “Mama” on so many levels. She really got on my nerves I don’t understand a woman like her but I stuck with the story. I knew it would end badly but I needed to see how it would unfold. It’s just a glimpse in a life of of Leni and Mama full a toxic relationship, abuse and isolation. It’s also about love, friendship and a tight-knit community. I appreciated how Leni grew into her own woman and could distinguish real love from the toxic relationship between her parents. Life is messy and complicated. Women throughout history have endured toxic relationships and abuse. Living in Hannah’s Alaska in the early 70s was very hard. People tragically died in this story. Hannah doesn’t shy away from these hard subjects. I’m glad she doesn’t. In the end, I was happy for Leni and the life she made for herself.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Setting the Record Straight
Revisado: 03-01-23
I enjoyed listening to Prince Harry’s story. It was written and well read. My only criticism are that some of the chapters were too short and left me thinking, “what’s the point”? while other chapters paint a picture and provides examples of the toxicity of the British press and Royal Family. I’m happy for him, Meghan and their children that they got away but sad it had to come to that. To not have your family stick up for you and defend you is a ultimate betrayal. The truth and love always wins.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Loved This
Revisado: 01-26-23
I thought the story and characters were fantastic. It is sad, suspenseful, and life affirming. It’s for anyone who enjoys stories of historical fiction, estranged family relationships, hardships and survival. Not for people who can’t handle traumatic material or sad themes. I really enjoyed it and could wait to listen while traveling in my car, on the train, in the grocery store…

Unforgettable Story and Characters
Revisado: 07-03-22
Beautifully written and narrative. I especially appreciated this book as an African American middle-aged woman. Then ending filled my eyes with tears and my heart with joy.
