Historia
In See Now Then, the brilliant and evocative new novel from Jamaica Kincaid (her first in 10 years), a marriage is revealed in all its joys and agonies. This piercing examination of the manifold ways in which the passing of time operates on the human consciousness unfolds gracefully, and Kincaid inhabits each of her characters - a mother, father, and two children living in a small village in New England - as they move, in their own minds, between the present, the past, and the future.

Couldn’t get past narration
Revisado: 01-20-23
I was really excited to read this book. I am a fan of Jamaica conference work. But unfortunately, the narration made it hard to follow the story. I just kept falling asleep

Historia
Driven by his single mother's dreams for his survival and success, Kevin Powell became the first in his family to attend a university, where he became a student leader keenly aware of widespread social injustice. But the struggle to define himself and break out of poverty continued into adulthood, with traumatic periods of homelessness and despair. As a young star journalist with Vibe magazine, Powell interviewed luminaries such as Tupac Shakur, writing influential chronicles of the evolution of hip-hop from his eyewitness view.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 01-18-23
I love memoirs and Black history makers who are still living so I was excited to read this book. I found the writing awkward and pedantic which was surprising since it’s the memoir of a writer. The narration was over enunciated and over emphasized which gave it a very weird rhythm. The story itself was interesting but unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend this book. I’m glad it was free.

Historia
Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts is a genre-bending memoir, a work of "autotheory" offering fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of the author's relationship with the artist Harry Dodge. This story, which includes Nelson's account of falling in love with Dodge, who is fluidly gendered, as well as her journey to and through a pregnancy, is an intimate portrayal of the complexities and joys of (queer) family making.

Profoundly fascinating yet incredibly boring
Revisado: 01-06-23
The subject matter, ideas and concepts presented in this book are utterly fascinating. I’m not a fan of the wringing style and the monotonous narration made it worse.

Historia
"If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see. If you come by aeroplane, you will land at the V. C. Bird International Airport. Vere Cornwall (V. C.) Bird is the prime minister of Antigua. You may be the sort of tourist who would wonder why a prime minister would want an airport named after him - why not a school, why not a hospital, why not some great public monument. You are a tourist and you have not yet seen..." So begins Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay, which shows us what we have not yet seen of the 10-by-12-mile island in the British West Indies.

Every tourist needs to read this!
Revisado: 12-07-22
I picked this book after searching for a novel set in Antigua as I like to read books set in the countries that I am visiting. This book was absolutely perfect. It opens with a searingly ironic message to often thoughtless tourists which will challenge your assumptions. It also provides a searingly ironic account of the history and politics of Antigua and relates it to conditions today. The tone is genius, the content is fascinating and the narration is superb.

It was pretty easy to figure out whodunnit rather early. I still thought it was a decent story but one piece of the mystery is never resolved and never mentioned at the end which bugged me. Good performance though.
