The PERFECT Audio Book.
Revisado: 08-12-19
As a long-time Audible member and even longer avid reader, I have come across only a handful of books that have blown me away. This is just such a book. Lori Gottlieb is a professional writer and that is evident in the way she has made this book a page turner, despite its being non-fiction and extremely informative as well. She seamlessly weaves all these together in her slow revelation of details about her own therapy and that of four patients whose stories we follow as avidly as we do hers. She builds suspense and gives a fulfilling conclusion, all the while helping us see so much about ourselves. It isn't a self-help book by any means, but she gives so much information that the reader/listener can't help but engage in some serious self-examination. (Well, I did.) I may have to buy the print version just so that I can go back and reread and copy passages.
And the narrator is absolutely perfect. She captures Gottlieb's compassion and humor and her voice alterations never leave the listener in doubt as to which person is speaking. She is a joy to listen to.

Too Much Throat-Clearing, Etc.
Revisado: 09-13-18
The information was fantastic. But I finally had to quit at Dickens, and may not learn about the rest of the novels. The reason? As another reviewer (and maybe more than one) said, Dr. Weinstein's throat clearing, coughing, and other noises were very distracting. You'd think someone might have noticed this early on (I mean, it is 32 hours plus) and done something about it. Too bad Robert Greenburg couldn't have done these; he is so entertaining.

The fastest 22 hours and 47 minutes I've ever experienced. And Simon Vance, oh Simon Vance. His mastery of different voices is superior to any other narrator I've listened to. I hope Elizabeth is putting the final touches on her next masterpiece and Simon will be the reader.

Historia
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself strapped to a giant rocket that's about to go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour? Or to look back on Earth from outer space and see the surprisingly precise line between day and night? Or to stand in front of the Hubble Space Telescope, wondering if the emergency repair you're about to make will inadvertently ruin humankind's chance to unlock the universe's secrets? Mike Massimino has been there, and in Spaceman he puts you inside the suit.

It just gets better and better.
Revisado: 03-09-18
What did you love best about Spaceman?
Massimino's honesty, integrity, and humor.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Not any others really to choose from - but seriously, he is an intelligent, humble, 'everyday' guy who tells a fascinating story. No one else could have read his book. His descriptions of space and the views of earth are related in genuine awe, so much so that the reader shares this awe. Yet his Long Island accent never lets the listener forget his roots, and he continually credits others with helping him become one of only 16 people to work on the Hubble in space.
Have you listened to any of Mike Massimino’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Are there others? I'd get them in a heartbeat.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both!
Any additional comments?
My favorite non-fiction audio book. Bumped Boys in the Boat into second place.

Historia
Having been abandoned on the steps of an orphanage as an infant, lovable car thief and Dublin charmer Mahony assumed all his life that his mother had simply given him up. But when he receives an anonymous note suggesting that foul play may have led to his mother's disappearance, he sees only one option: to return to the rural Irish village where he was born and find out what really happened 26 years ago.

Ah, Aiden Kelly!
Revisado: 02-17-18
What made the experience of listening to Himself the most enjoyable?
Without a doubt, in my six or more years of listening to audio books, Aiden Kelly is the best reader I have heard. It may seem trite to say I could listen to him read the phone book (if there are any left) but it's true. The warmth and humor in his voice, his ability to create different characters realistically, and the accent, oh the accent. Oh, and yes, I did love the plot of the book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mahoney, of course, but the two main female characters were also very strongly developed.
Who was the most memorable character of Himself and why?
Aiden Kelly, the narrator.
Any additional comments?
I can't wait until Jess Kidd's next two books are available in audio format, and I only pray Aiden Kelly reads one or both of them. She is a glorious writer.

Revisado: 09-12-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
No one who is insulted by formulaic plots, trite dialogue, and an abundance of gratuitous, graphic gore.
What could James Patterson and Maxine Paetro have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
At least leave out the pages of unnecessary violence.
Which scene was your favorite?
Truthfully, not a one.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Private?
If I were an editor I never would have accepted this book.
Any additional comments?
I'm just glad it was free.

Historia
The leaders of the free world descend on Scotland for an international conference, and every cop in the country is needed for front-line duty - except one. John Rebus' reputation precedes him, and his bosses don't want him anywhere near Presidents Bush and Putin, which explains why he's manning an abandoned police station when a call comes in. During a preconference dinner at Edinburgh Castle, a delegate has fallen to his death. Accident, suicide, or something altogether more sinister?

I didn't want it to end!
Revisado: 11-27-16
Where does The Naming of the Dead rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Recently? It's #1. I've read all the John Rebus novels but long enough ago that I'm enjoying them anew - provided James McPherson is the reader. Everything is worth paying attention to.
Any additional comments?
Rankin's dry wit is far more evident when his books are read by McPherson.

Revisado: 11-01-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Sadly, no, I wouldn't recommend the audio version. I did, however, buy the paperback edition to give to a friend.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Whale Warriors?
The game of "chicken" the ship played with the Japanese. Even the narrator didn't ruin that.
How could the performance have been better?
Different narrator.
What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?
How disappointed I am in Green Peace.
