Historia
When three-month-old Lia Lee arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she nor her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos.

Such an important story!
Revisado: 11-29-24
Both of my children read this book in college, and said I needed to read it myself. I am so very glad I got to listen to it! With the current state of political disdain for refugees and anyone who isn't "like us," I think it is even more important to have access to life from others' perspectives, and to be able to appreciate just how difficult it is to come to a foreign country and make your way. Stories like this bring perspective and empathy. My only frustration is that I didn't know the narrator's background before starting to listen. As a science yeacher, I think I came with expectations similar to most of the science and history books narrated here. Once I read other reviews and comments, I understood the reason for the narrator's lack of familiarity with basic medical terms, pronunciations and occasionally syntax issues. Knowing this made it easier to overlook what had originally nearly caused me to stop listening and go find the physical book. I'm glad I kept listening.

Historia
In 1979, a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within the US Army. Defying all known accepted military practice - and indeed, the laws of physics - they believed that a soldier could adopt the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls and, perhaps most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them. Entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth Battalion. And they really weren't joking. What's more, they're back and fighting the War on Terror.

Revisado: 04-04-22
Jon Ronson has a knack for getting close to interesting people and their stories, no matter how odd. I especially enjoy listening to him narrating his own work, though but by this point I would probably hear his voice in my head while reading his work anyway!

Historia
Smallpox, the only infectious disease to have been eradicated, was one of the most terrifying of human scourges. It covered the skin with hideous, painful boils, killed a third of its victims, and left the survivors disfigured for life. In this riveting, often terrifying look at the history of smallpox, Jonathan B. Tucker tells the story of this deadly disease, the heroic efforts to eradicate it worldwide, and the looming dangers it still poses today.

Eye opening and relevant!
Revisado: 11-07-21
Those who don't learn and remember history are doomed to repeat it. This surprising account of the eradication of smallpox not only brought to life an achievement in my lifetime that most take for granted , but it also uncovers the fact that we should have been much more prepared for a pandemic like COVID and how people would respond. It also adds a frightening look at the biological weapons race many aren't aware of. I just wish the narration was better. It was too slow, and kund if robot-like. To have the name of the smallpox virus mispronounced from first to last page is just sloppy. Other scientific terms were also mispronounced, as well. You would think a narrator would do their homework before embarking on a science book!

Historia
The man who invented shock rock tells the amazing and, yeah, shocking story of how he slayed his thirsty demons with a golf club. It started one day when Cooper was watching a Star Trek rerun between concerts, bored and drunk on a quart-of-whiskey-a-day habit. A friend dragged the rocker out of his room and suggested a round of golf. Cooper has been a self-confessed golf addict ever since.

Historia
Rock and roll in the BC (Before Cooper) era was a tamer, milder world. In Who I Really Am, Cooper’s latest addition to Audible’s Words + Music series, we learn how the boa-wearing (not the feathered kind) maestro arrived at a show and sound - let’s call it AC for After Cooper - that has entertained millions of kids while terrifying parents in equal measure. Cooper drew inspiration from Saturday matinee horror movies, applied a "no such thing as too much" attitude, and hitched it to a kick-ass rock and roll band.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Having visited Chernobyl before the safe confinement structure was completed, and gaving myself walked the streets of Pripyat and Kiev, I could easily imagine myself there. It is a very intriguing idea that Chernobyl had such a major impact on the downfall if the USSR. The reader was wonderful - did well with difficult names and technical terms!

Historia
Craig Ferguson has defied the odds his entire life. He has failed when he should have succeeded and succeeded when he should have failed. The fact that he is neither dead nor in a locked facility (at the time of printing) is something of a miracle in itself. In Craig’s candid and revealing memoir, listeners will get a look into the mind and recollections of the unique and twisted Scottish American who became a national hero for pioneering the world’s first TV robot skeleton sidekick and reviving two dudes in a horse suit dancing as a form of entertainment.

Well-writen, performed and endearing. Funny and deep and absolutely genuine. I honestly looked forward to my commutes to and from work because I couldn't wait to get back to the book! It's the kind of book that if I had been physically reading it, I would have been up until the dawn until I finished it in one sitting.

Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Historia
Fascinated by our pervasive terror of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty set out to discover how other cultures care for their dead. In rural Indonesia, she observes a man clean and dress his grandfather's mummified body. Grandpa's mummy has lived in the family home for two years, where the family has maintained a warm and respectful relationship. She meets Bolivian natitas (cigarette-smoking, wish-granting human skulls) and introduces us to a Japanese kotsuage.
