Enjoyed the writing and narration. The writing was not morbid or maudlin considering the subject matter. Kept my attention from start to finish.

I am surprised the narrator didn't fall asleep. She did her best, but my gosh, it was boring. I was expecting a dramatic account of the crash, but the majority of the book was made up of explaining the mechanics of the landing gear and detailing every single minute of the legal battle which followed. Not entertaining or interesting, at all, for me at least.

Narration bothered me

I couldn't get past the narrator's loud inhalations, as if he was having a hard time catching his breath. It was so distracting, I couldn't ignore it and was unable to focus on the story. Even without that narrator I'm not sure the book would have held my attention. There was a little too much background information and detail, which made me want to skip forward and get back to the actual events.

Would have made a better movie

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Definitely. If the author had stuck with one story line at a time instead of jumping around so much, it might have been less confusing. I found myself wishing it were a movie, so I could put a face with all the different names and visualize the layout of the circus. A lot of superfluous details could have been left out. I would have preferred an abridged version.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Sorry to say, I have not been able to finish the book. The beginning held my interest, but the longer it goes on, the less I care to know.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The only suggestion I can think of is to read with a little less emotion. The story is compelling enough in itself without trying to add any drama to narration.

Do you think The Circus Fire needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. There is almost too much information in this one book.

Any additional comments?

My review may be tainted by the fact that, prior to "The Circus Fire", I had just listened to "To Sleep With the Angels." While the subject matter is very similar, the story of the school fire was presented in a more cohesive fashion and was a superior listening experience for me.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend 9 Minutes, 20 Seconds to anyone who enjoys this genre - non-fiction - aviation accidents - true life drama etc.

What other book might you compare Nine Minutes, Twenty Seconds to and why?

Killer Show: The Station Nightclub Fire, America’s Deadliest Rock Concert
Similar in that it recounts the events before, during, and after a tragedy, along with survivor and victim stories.

Which scene was your favorite?

The emotional scene in the ambulance between the co-pilot and the lady EMT brought me to tears.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Several, but the co-pilot reminding the EMT of her son stands out the most to me. Also, the encounter between Kevin B. and the girl in the flowered dress struck a chord.

Any additional comments?

Online, I was able to find the the seating chart with pictures of the victims included in the book. This was very helpful in keeping all the passengers straight and visualizing how things occurred during the accident.

When details were necessary, the author was able to explain the technical aspects of the crash in a way that I could understand. It was not boring to me. The narrator did a good job .However, being from the Atlanta area myself, I found the southern accent to be a little over the top, and cringed every time he said, "Bi-LOCKS- i" Just an observation :)

While the book does have many inspiring moments, I was left feeling sad and
somewhat depressed at the end. I should have kept in mind that a story about a fatal plane crash can't be expected to have all happy endings.
