Historia
Cameron Winter is troubled in heart and mind. He's plagued by memories of his time as a government operative investigating a notorious Turkish sex trafficker. The fact that the mission was left unfinished still haunts him and threatens to tear him apart. In the midst of his painful soul-searching, Winter crosses paths with an ex-flame—his first love—and the chance encounter ignites a passion he thought was long lost. But just as soon as she wanders back into Winter's life, the woman vanishes, leaving Winter scrambling to track her down.

Well constructed subplots along with the main plot.
Revisado: 11-28-24
The protagonist continues to develop in this series, slowly and methodically, and most importantly, in a surprisingly believable set of scenarios and backstories while endeavoring to make a meaningful and purposeful life for himself; not simply hiding or escaping from his past. In the process he is drawn outside of himself as he risks his own safety for the sake of others and thus escapes the more typical narcissistic self gratification of many in similar straights. This is the best of the series, in my opinion, as the author is also growing in his own awareness of his main character’s finer qualities. It’s a masterfully constructed series and my favorite so far in this genre.

Historia
Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery. Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

True Myrh
Revisado: 08-07-21
A dream within a dream, a story within a story, a true myth that becomes truer with each retelling or rereading. It is not critical to know the story of Psyche and Cupid and in some ways it may be of some satisfaction to come to an understanding of it through this version before Lewis unpacks the original in the epilogue. The narrator is perfect I feel for the part. And I thoroughly enjoyed it and had no trouble imagining each character in the story as the reader’s abilities to distinguish appropriately the characters in no way inhibited the imagination in my experience. Indeed I can hardly wait to listen again. Lewis grasped perfectly the ancient skill of crafting a story that wants to be read aloud and listened to.

Best thing since sliced bread
Revisado: 07-22-21
Father Mike is an excellent reader and his comments are enlightening and encouraging. He is very upbeat and stays true to the text and does not try and gloss over some of the difficult passages. He comes across like a dear brother in the faith. I am not Roman Catholic but I can appreciate his zeal and love for Holy Scriptures. I’ve read the Bible through a couple of times but find it difficult to do on my own so having this daily activity with Father Mike has helped me stay disciplined. I have recommended it to friends who are non Roman Catholics and they have also enjoyed the daily podcasts. I would encourage anyone if great or little to no religious faith to try it out for a week and see what happens. I wouldn’t worry too much about starting at the current place or at the beginning of the year if one would rather. Either way can be an encouraging blessing to start or end your day with a podcast. They are short and mostly less than 20 minutes long. He is a fast talker and reader but it plays well at .8 to 1.2 speed sounding pretty well paced depending on your hearing and comprehension ability so play with the speed to find your favorite pace. I generally like 1.2.

A masterful performance for one of the great works of a beloved master author
Revisado: 01-09-21
It worked out marvelously well as a narration since Dickens himself wrote in a way that lent the reader much help with allowing the listeners to know who was speaking without having to hear distinctly different voices. Yet Tim Curry is also a wonderful narrator with a wide range of believable voices to give the reading life and make the listener a willing participant attending to every syllable. I frankly cannot imagine it done any better than this and my only criticism is that I now will always judge myself a poor reader when I recall Tim’s performance to my mind when assessing my own performance reading a particular work such as this.

This is the story of Despereaux Tilling, a mouse in love with music, stories, and a princess named Pea. It is also the story of a rat called Roscuro, who lives in darkness but covets a world filled with light. And it is the story of Miggery Sow, a slow-witted serving girl with a simple, impossible wish. These characters are about to embark on a journey that will lead them down into a horrible dungeon, up into a glittering castle, and ultimately, into each other's lives.

Truly inspirational and thought provoking on several levels
Revisado: 10-04-19
This is a wonderful tale told like a classic fairy tale and full of hope, classic themes of love, revenge, forgiveness, and courage, appealing to a wide audience, I think. It’s one I can listen to over and over again. The reader does a fine job with this, adding great inflection to the characters’ voices and speaking at a volume and rate that keeps the listener attentive and interested.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Outstanding biographical glimpses into a portion of modern culture’s development.
Revisado: 08-03-18
The author and reader has done a marvelous job and the work is both intriguing and sobering. I highly recommend this book to advanced high school and beyond for its depth of understanding and appreciation for the complexities of family and relationships in the culture. Much is explained and sense is made out of the seemingly random and senseless sentiments that arise in certain segments of our society which often are treated with shallow disregard in the media.

Audie Murphy was a desperately poor eighteen-year-old orphan when he joined the Army, nineteen when he first saw a buddy die from an enemy bullet and an enemy die from one of his own. By VE day, he had killed at least 240 Germans, had single-handedly destroyed a German tank in one battle and held off six tanks in another, and had become the most decorated soldier in American history, winning every medal his country offered, including the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Revisado: 08-03-18
It felt like I was listening to Audie himself tell the stories. It’s hard to describe the impact. It’s not written from a perspective of someone proud of their achievements. More of a matter of fact here is what happened journal with pithy remarks that make the conversation real and effective. I’d recommend this for young high schoolers and older to read and consider.
