Sila feels nothing and Bay feels so much he’s numb. They’re both wicked smart and obsessed with each other. It’s perfectly dark. Draper is a new to me narrator and I love him, I hope to hear much more of his work in the future.

where’s the plausibility?

Sebastian York is awful

Eliza Doolittle narration

The narrator’s enunciation is so exaggerated and slow it detracts from the story. The speed can be improved (1.2x) but nothing can save the rigid, painfully precise, overly crisp diction. It is unnatural and distracting.

Chinese magical martial arts meets Dark Souls (with bonus equality for women)

I have listened to this series repeatedly, and I mean repeatedly. I’m probably on my 10th listen; I’ve lost count.

Will Wight develops a complex world by peeling off layers of complexity like layers of an onion. You get a good introduction to the mechanics of the magic system in the first book before it expands in the second.

Also I cannot shout Will Wight to the rooftops enough for writing strong, engaging, diverse female characters.

good narrator cannot fix a horrible story.

1. This is such a departure from the Robin Hood story there is no point in using the names Little John and Hood.
2. I couldn’t keep listening once we got to the molestation of an unconscious man by a woman disguised as a boy; even more disturbing as the unconscious man was sodomized as a boy and had sent the woman/boy away because he was terrified by his own attraction and didn’t want to repeat the crimes committed against him. As another reviewer states, this is glorified rape.

Amnesiatic protagonist

There were many times when the protagonist forgot something that had happened moments or hours before. Absolutely irritating to listen to.

Antony is a pig.

If I had read this as my first Julia Quinn novel I never would have read another. All of the other books in this series are fairly decent to even great.

Antony is a pig. I kept pursuing the story hoping that his character would improve. He doesn’t. There is nothing endearing about this man. The author tries to make decent behavior towards women appear like heroic behavior. Instead, every time I think the character is finally improving he returns to his original top notch disgusting behavior. And the heroine, who I do like? Falls in love with him? No. No. No.
