Historia
For well over a century, public schools have been a non-partisan gathering place and vital center of civic life in America—but something has changed. In School Moms, journalist Laura Pappano explores the on-the-ground story of how public schools across the country have become ground zero in a cultural and political war as the far-right have made efforts to seek power over school boards.

Great story, mediocre narration
Revisado: 12-27-24
This book offers a detailed and compelling overview of mothers’ activism in schools in the last several decades, with particular attention to the last 5 years. I have no critiques of the text, but the audiobook producer really failed at checking correct pronunciation of mainstream names like WEB DeBois and Beto O’Rourke and basic Spanish words like arepas and barrios. The narrator was otherwise ok, but these regular lazy and inaccurate pronunciations were aggravating and unprofessional.

Historia
This thought-provoking work traces the origins of voucher-based education reform to mid-twentieth-century fears over school desegregation. It shows how, in the intervening decades, a cabal of billionaire conservatives supporting a host of special political interests-including economic libertarianism, religious choice, and parental rights-have converged around the issue of education freedom in an ongoing culture war. Through deliberate policymaking, legislation, and litigation, Cowen reveals, an insular advocacy network has enacted a flawed system for education finance driven largely by dogma.

Rather redundant throughout with a lot of odd centering of the author in larger policy discussion

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Poorly researched with no sense of reality
Revisado: 11-24-24
The author loves uncomplicated binaries that don’t take any sociocultural factors into account and barely engages actual youth perspectives in his analysis. He dreams of a world long gone and offers frustratingly impractical advice. Not sure how any editor who cares about quality research for public consumption allowed this to be published. As an educator, parent, and researcher, this was infuriating to listen to.

Great content, terrible narration
Revisado: 10-24-15
Would you consider the audio edition of The Making of Asian America to be better than the print version?
No, narration is poor and disengaging. I own the print copy and will likely switch over to reading rather than listening.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Making of Asian America?
This book is important - it's content is often relegated to Asian American Studies and Lee's synthesis is well done. Great primer to Asian American history and a more diverse view of American history.
What didn’t you like about Emily Woo Zeller’s performance?
She sounds like a robot and there are odd, staccato pauses throughout that break the flow.
