Historia
In sobering detail, The Korean War chronicles a US home front agitated by Joseph McCarthy, where absolutist conformity discouraged open inquiry and citizen dissent. Cumings incisively ties our current foreign policy back to Korea: an America with hundreds of permanent military bases abroad, a large standing army, and a permanent national security state at home, the ultimate result of a judicious and limited policy of containment evolving into an ongoing and seemingly endless global crusade.

Garbage
Revisado: 03-13-25
Another revisionist historian looking at a war through modern eyes. The tropes of “American intervention” and “Americans were racist” garbage. Made it two and half hours and said no more. Should have stopped at the first hour when the author started praising Mao.

Historia
Over a 35-year career, Daniel Bolger rose through the army infantry to become a three-star general, commanding in both theaters of the U.S. campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. He participated in meetings with top-level military and civilian players, where strategy was made and managed. At the same time, he regularly carried a rifle alongside rank-and-file soldiers in combat actions - unusual for a general.

Finally the truth
Revisado: 10-25-24
A lot of reviews mention that it’s more like a chronological of the wars. I found that it’s a lot of context that supports the conclusion. As a former soldier who spent years on the ground, I can say that this is an accurate and honest assessment of the GWOT.

Revisado: 10-13-24
Started off as a sci-fi detective novel then switched to a religious, apocalyptic story intertwined with global warming/pseudo Lord of the Rings allegory. Decent plot and a good ending but meh overall.

Revisado: 08-24-24
I wasn’t part of the invasion but served 05-08 so the latter part of the book is more of my experience. But the relationships, the struggles, & the men’s stories reflect so much of what I experienced. A good read!

Historia
In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. How these men persevered makes a vivid portrait of war at its most inspiring and devastating.

From one of the best leaders in Vietnam
Revisado: 08-16-24
An honest account of a battle from all perspectives. You get the overview of the battle from the leaders, an account of the average soldier’s experience, and even a general overview of the enemies strategy. Also, unlike the movie, it includes the account of LZ Albany. A real glimpse into how the toll this battle had on these men’s lives.

Historia
In late June, 2005, media sources recounted the tragic story of 19 US special-operations personnel who died at the hands of insurgent/terrorist leader Ahmad Shah - and the lone survivor of Shah's ambush - deep in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan. The harrowing events of Operation Red Wings marked an important - yet widely misreported - chapter in the Global War on Terror, the full details of which the public burned to learn. Victory Point reveals the complete, as-yet untold story of Operation Red Wings and the follow-on mission, Operation Whalers.

Lots of rah, rah.
Revisado: 08-05-24
Overall it is a decent book. There is a good deal of information about the Marines time in the Pech Valley. However it is full of Marine propaganda. I don’t t want to take anything away from them or what they accomplished as there is some great lessons in their work. It’s just the saccharine adjectives of the author that ruined it for me. The performance of the book was really great! If you are looking for a book that smacks of a John Wayne movie, this book is it. However, if you are wanting more of a journalistic approach, there are several books that do that respectfully and are better reads.

July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

Starting on September 11th, 2012, al-Qa'ida carried out a series of terrorist attacks on the U.S. Consulate and CIA Annex in Benghazi, Libya, killing four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. With over 150 attackers at the Consulate alone, the attack was the largest terrorist attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in history. And yet, the case remained unsolved. The terrorists were never brought to justice because they had not been identified until now.

My Brothers keeper
Revisado: 07-09-24
The amount of time, effort, and energy spent on the research is amazing. These are the people who you want watching your back in a world full of wolves. Their dedication to their fallen brothers in compiling all of the names and affiliations of the attackers is astounding. What I don’t understand is, If we are going to let the CIA and the Department of State go and stick their hands into these places, why are we not (have we not) going after these criminals? I agree that an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind, but you also don’t lay down when you are attacked either. Government/politics is a giant game. Those who died, died for each other and should have been avenged. Sad.

Historia
In 2003, the Special Forces soldiers entered an area later called "the most dangerous place in Afghanistan". Here, where the line between civilians and armed zealots was indistinct, they illustrated the Afghan proverb "I destroy my enemy by making him my friend." Fry recounts how they were seen as welcome guests rather than invaders. Soon after their deployment ended, the Pech Valley reverted to turmoil. Their success was never replicated.

This is why we lost both Vietnam & Afghanistan.
Revisado: 05-06-24
Great book, not at all your typical war memoir. The approach this ODA took has been mentioned in a couple of books but not nearly in this amount of depth. I don’t know why, after two wars, the DOD refuses to “buy into” unconventional warfare like was waged by this team, its predecessor ODA’s that ran through Afghanistan in the first year of the war, and the ODA’s the were in Vietnam. The book is well written, enough context is presented to make sure you know all sides of the story, and has an interesting story. Should be mandatory reading for the Pentagon brass.
