Historia
Briseis has a gift: she can grow plants from tiny seeds to rich blooms with a single touch. When Briseis’ aunt dies and wills her a dilapidated estate in rural New York, Bri and her parents decide to leave Brooklyn behind for the summer. Hopefully there, surrounded by plants and flowers, Bri will finally learn to control her gift. But their new home is sinister in ways they could never have imagined - it comes with a specific set of instructions, an old-school apothecary and a walled garden filled with the deadliest botanicals in the world.

unexpectedly delightful and intriguing

the cover art work drew me in, but it still took me a while to finally take a chance, and buy the book and start listening. i immediately loved the narration. finally found some black people that i might actually know or be. 👍🏽🤗 just normal people, living their lives, and having normal conversations. i love how the author writes dialog. it sounds like myself, and other people i actually know.
the magical aspects are inventive, and intriguing to me. i didn't think plants as a superpower would be that interesting, but to my delight and as the book went on, i became more and more invested.
just when i thought the whole book was going to be a mellow ride all the way... the plot picked up and started twisting and turning. i was quite shocked by the end at how dark it got, compared to how it started out. i was furious at the ending event, and i am hoping for a resolution in the 2nd book... which i will now get.
yes...this is a teen book... yes... the main character makes dumb (to me) and frustrating decisions. i probably did too when i was her age, so i give the book grace in that regard. the ending is a bit abrupt, but that's not the worse thing in the world. it just means pick up book 2, and lets see what happens next. i'm thoroughly hooked in for the ride now. 😊

companion audio to the book
Revisado: 09-09-23
i got the books years ago, maybe decades. i always like the ideas she presented on our enjoyment, or lack thereof of pleasure in our lives. revisiting the book via this audio version was a nice experience for me. my focus was on what was said, and how i could benefit from it. for a short 3 hours, it was more than enough to take in the message and get a lifetime of value from the ideas and suggestions presented. if you feel that you are a person who resists various good feelings, and even if you don't feel that way, you probably do in some areas of your life, i suggest giving this book a listen. if the audio quality isn't up to par for you, you can always just get the physical copy of the book. i am glad i gave this a listen. i look forward to the rest of my life with these new observations in mind of how i can increase my awareness of the pleasure i long to experience.

Historia
Calamity is confronting two big transitions: the death of her beloved father and the beginning of menopause, a physical shift that has rekindled her gift for finding lost things. Suddenly, she is getting hot flashes that seem to forge objects out of thin air, most notably a four-year old boy. As Calamity takes the child into her care, she discovers that all is not as it seems. Then, Calamity must reawaken to the mysteries surrounding her own childhood and the early disappearance of her mother.

surprisingly delightful and engaging ...

it took me a few tries to finally get into the story. the main character was kinda annoying, but she was also intriguing after a while of listening to her constantly rambling on (inside her head and out). by the end of the story, I was fully invested in how things would turn out. nothing turned out as I thought it would, but the ending was satisfying enough for me if I think of the story as a fairy tale. I enjoyed learning about this culture and some of its ways and figures of speech. the accent grew on me, and I learned to love it, and understand it more. I didn't really expect to like this book as much as I did, but the narrator was so good...she was perfect in my opinion, I now want to listen to her narrate some more books. the writing was exquisite, and I will now try a few more of the author's books. i'm glad I gave this book a try. I've been expanding my horizons by adding new authors to my collection, and this is a nice little gem that I found.
