This book is wrong about origin of Churches of Christ (not Mormon)
Revisado: 01-12-24
The history presented of the Disciples of Christ, the Christian Church and the Church of Christ were represented on this book as creating of Joseph Smith and a part of Mormonism but this is incorrect.
The Disciples of Christ, Christian Church and Churches of Christ were begun by Barton Stone and Thomas Campbell along with his son Alexander Campbell. They all combined to form the Disciples of Christ. The a Christian Church and the Church of Christ broke off from that. These churches have nothing to do with Mormonism or Joseph Smith. Since the author got this so wrong, it has made me question how accurate the rest of it is.

Historia
First published in 1976, Paul Johnson's exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude. Weaving a great range of material, the scholar and author Johnson creates an ambitious panoramic overview of the evolution of the Western world since the founding of a little-known "Jesus sect".

Read Brant Pitre's the case for Jesus instead.

Idiocy of man taking a simple story of Jesus, and manifesting it into something so complicated.
Revisado: 01-08-24
Focus on Catholicism even in the 20th century when Protestant churches were growing. Would like to have had more reformation history. Also, many phrases in French or Latin used but not translated to English.

Historia
Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.

Excellent telling of as much of the story as we know
Revisado: 10-03-23
I had come across a factionalized version of Kim Philby and wanted to know more about him and how his story evolved. This book told the story in a very interesting way with surprises along the way such as Ian Fleming and Myles Copeland.

Historia
The Enlightenment had been awakened by the European Age of Discovery, but the continent was also a seedbed of insurrection, holy wars, and volatility. People were growing weary of the unpredictable system of monarchy, a post that was inherited only by members of an exclusive bloodline or connection, one that often muted the voices of the people. Time and time again, grossly incompetent and seemingly diabolic rulers had come to power through the rigged regal system.

Spending a credit for this was a waste
Revisado: 06-21-23
I felt that this performer was not good. I felt he read as if he was in a big hurry. The story lacked any feel for the drama of the time and the book was way too short for the cost of a credit. Very disappointed.
