I wasn’t impressed
Revisado: 04-04-25
I’m not quite sure what the point of the book was. There were a lot of musings about people’s lives, but I felt very disconnected. I didn’t think it flowed and I didn’t feel any suspense. Also, why did they have to swear so much? It’s interesting, There were only certain characters that swore and it didn’t enhance the story at all.

Historia
When twenty-seven-year-old Joan Bergstrom sends a fan letter—as well as a gift of saffron—to fifty-nine-year-old Imogen Fortier, a life-changing friendship begins. Joan lives in Los Angeles and is just starting out as a writer for the newspaper food pages. Imogen lives on Camano Island outside Seattle, writing a monthly column for a Pacific Northwest magazine, and while she can hunt elk and dig for clams, she’s never tasted fresh garlic--exotic fare in the Northwest of the sixties.

Historia
Lila Kennedy has a lot on her plate. A broken marriage, two wayward daughters, a house that is falling apart, and an elderly stepfather who seems to have quietly moved in. Her career is in freefall and her love life is . . . complicated. So when her real dad—a man she has barely seen since he ran off to Hollywood thirty-five years ago—suddenly appears on her doorstep, it feels like the final straw. But it turns out even the family you thought you could never forgive might have something to teach you: about love, and what it actually means to be family.

Historia
In the middle of the 20th century, the music of the Mississippi Delta arrived in Chicago, drawing the attention of entrepreneurs like the Chess brothers. Their label, Chess Records, helped shape that music into the Chicago Blues, the soundtrack for a transformative era in American history. But for Leeba Groski, Chess Records was just where she worked. Leeba didn't exactly fit in, but her passion for music and her talented piano playing captured the attention of her neighbor, Leonard Chess, who offered her a job at his new record company.

Liked it all. It’s a good story with an excellent portrayal of how sad the life of a person of colors life could be. Discrimination is such a negative and hurtful way to approach one another.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

The history
Revisado: 05-20-24
I liked the authors note because it tied everything up very neatly. I think it’s very important to read authors notes for a better understanding of the book and the incredible history that is shared in this book. The fact that Clara Barton and Mary Hobart were related to her is amazing and that she kept this diary for almost 30 years, and that it was passed down through the family. I am a nurse and enjoy reading about women who were practicing medicine in the past.

Fiona Davis has a gift. Her books bring nuggets of history to life. I loved how she intertwined fact and fiction in this story but I think it’s very important for people to listen to the authors note to really appreciate the story. Thank you Fiona Davis, I can’t wait to read your next book. ♥️

A good book to listen to, but I’m not sure if I would have read it
Revisado: 09-20-23
This book is an interesting story, and I think it’s made more interesting by the lilt and reading style of Meryl Streep.
It’s like being read to before you go to sleep as a child. It’s just very relaxing. It’s not an exciting story. It’s a complex story, but it’s a subtly complex story. It’s set during the pandemic and makes you think of things that were normal prior to the pandemic and how things were forced to change during the pandemic.
I enjoyed listening to it, if I had been reading it, I may have lost interest. I recommend listening to it and see what things in it, touch your heart.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.
