Harper has helpful, useful, and interesting things to say about “unf*cking” your brain. A very useful little book! The audio quality is not amazing here, and the editing of the recording left a lot to be desired. I’m glad I got the book free through Audible Plus.

Kristin Kobes du Mez tracks the themes of toxic masculinity and abusive patriarchal power in evangelicalism from the 1960s to the present, tracing the modern development of these themes through the philosophies of prominent Christian writers and influencers. The damage done by this movement culminates, in du Mez’s book, with the rise of D****d T***p and the abuse brought to light in the #MeToo movement.

This book will definitely appeal to those disaffected with white evangelicalism. I would like to see this book serve as a call to repentance for white evangelicals, but due to my own experiences, I do not have sufficient faith in their willingness to take an honest look in this mirror.

Trevor Noah tells stories from his childhood in an engaging and compelling form. The book itself would be a great read, but the audiobook performance provides additional layers as Noah "does the voices"--he narrates in a multiplicity of different South African accents and speaks in and translates from multiple languages, throughout the book.

Clarity and abstraction

Elizabeth Klett presents a beautiful rendering of Virginia Woolf's collection of short stories. The stories themselves are curious and occasionally abstract as Woolf brings to light the difficulties and paradoxes of the lives of women in early 20th century society.

Klett's reading is clear and expressive, but not overdramatic as her voice is able to capture the subtleties and ironies of Woolf's often challenging writing. She renders Woolf's abstract prose accessible to the average listener and captures the sheer beauty of Woolf's writing.
