Historia
To the original text of what has become a classic of American historical literature, Bernard Bailyn adds a substantial essay, "Fulfillment", as a postscript. Here he discusses the intense nationwide debate on the ratification of the Constitution, stressing the continuities between that struggle over the foundations of the national government and the original principles of the Revolution.

Good Information
Revisado: 02-29-24
The author gives lots of scientific evidence, which is better than most books I’ve read/listened to. Some of the information is fairly technical and uses scientific jargon, but you can still understand the main points even if you can’t remember all the details.

Historia
Already a classic, this landmark study of early Western thought now appears in a new edition with expanded coverage of the Middle Ages. Author Anthony Gottlieb looks afresh at the writings of the great thinkers, questions much of conventional wisdom, and explains his findings with unbridled brilliance and clarity. From the pre-Socratic philosophers through the celebrated days of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, up to Renaissance visionaries like Erasmus and Bacon, philosophy emerges here as a phenomenon unconfined by any one discipline.

Engagingly written, fun, worth it
Revisado: 12-05-21
Heavy in Greek and ancient philosophy of the west. Very light in medieval philosophy. Overall; decently organizing, but sometimes circular and difficult to follow. Great narrator. Enjoy.

Historia
The 25 years between the onset of the French Revolution in 1789 and the Bourbon Restoration after Napoleon in 1814 is an astonishing period in world history. This era shook the foundations of the old world and marked a permanent shift for politics, religion, and society - not just for France, but for all of Europe. An account of the events alone reads like something out of a thrilling novel.

Great content, decent presenter
Revisado: 07-10-21
The professor is excellent at content, but the presentation style is a bit too tough for me to get through. Would do better to buy her book over her lectures.

Historia
Augustine of Hippo's masterpiece The City of God is one of the greatest books ever written, yet its size - nearly 1,000 pages - too often intimidates even serious readers. Composed in the years after the sack of Rome in the fifth century, it ushers you on an astounding historical and theological journey through the final years of the ancient world. What made this book so powerful? What mysteries lie within it? What relevance does the 1,600-year-old text have for our world today?

One of my favorites in the Great Courses. I don’t recommend it if you are not familiar with philosophical or theological jargon, but if you are, this course is worth three credits. Dense, deep, inspiring, so good!

Historia
Five days after Abraham Lincoln was buried in Springfield, Illinois, John Locke Scripps, who had convinced Lincoln to write his first campaign autobiography, asserted that the 16th president had become "the Great American Man-the grand central figure in American (perhaps the World's) History." Historians still find it hard to quibble with Scripps's opinion."

Today, the US Constitution is the oldest, continually-operating instrument of government in the world. But to think of the Constitution as a fully-formed, canonical document is to miss out on an honest, well-rounded grasp of American history. Now, more than ever, any well-informed citizen should understand how the Constitution lives, breathes, and endures.

Historia
While it’s easy to get caught up - and, rightfully so - in the art of the Renaissance, you cannot have a full, rounded understanding of just how important these centuries were without digging beneath the surface, without investigating the period in terms of its politics, its spirituality, its philosophies, its economics, and its societies. Do just that with these 48 lectures that consider the European Renaissance from all sides, that disturb traditional understandings, that tip sacred cows, and that enlarges our understanding of how the Renaissance revolutionized the Western world.

Great material / Passionate prof / Hard to follow
Revisado: 06-17-19
Professor McNabb is passionate and knowledgeable about her subject, but she brings up too many topics in each lecture requiring background knowledge to fully enjoy. I had difficulty connecting the topics together and understanding their relevance.

Best lecturer I’ve ever heard

I enjoyed his ability to track key individuals as well as provide comments on the metanarrative engaging the meaning of the events themselves. It’s evident that he researched broadly, as thought critically, it is passionate about the subject. Highly recommended
