Historia
The chilling tome that launched an entire genre of books about the often gruesome but always tragic ways people have died in our national parks, this updated edition of the classic includes calamities in Yellowstone from the past sixteen years, including the infamous grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 2011 as well as a fatal hot springs accident in 2000. In these accounts, written with sensitivity as cautionary tales about what to do and what not to do in one of our wildest national parks, Whittlesey recounts deaths ranging from tragedy to folly.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-10-24
I read a book entitled, “Death in Big Bend” by Laurence Parent. That book was engaging, factual, and the individual stories of death in Big Bend were artfully interwoven to create a coherent book. This book on “Death in Yellowstone” lacked all of these attributes & was dull. It was written more like the obituary section of a newspaper.

Historia
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

Historia
From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Historia
For Francisco Cantú, the border is in the blood: His mother, a park ranger and daughter of a Mexican immigrant, raised him in the scrublands of the Southwest. Driven to understand the hard realities of the landscape he loves, Cantú joins the Border Patrol. He and his partners learn to track other humans under blistering sun and through frigid nights. They haul in the dead and deliver to detention those they find alive. Plagued by a growing awareness of his complicity in a dehumanizing enterprise, he abandons the patrol for civilian life.

Compelling
Revisado: 05-07-18
Recently, I spent several months as a volunteer in Big Bend National Park, so this story resonated with me. The border is harsh and unforgiving and so are the politics that frame our world. The border has a beauty and a soul that the author captured. There are two banks to a river, two sets of laws, and it is difficult to navigate the “the line” that becomes the river. Cantú has a bias but his message is poignant and he tells a very human story. My major criticism is that the author isn’t a good narrator. His “reading” lacked fluidity, it was jerky, and it was told in a monotone voice.

Historia
Philosophy begins with questions about the nature of reality and how we should live. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood. This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it.

“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

Honest
Revisado: 06-04-16
In many respects this is more about his personal story than it is about the mechanics of crafting fiction, but then the two are, profoundly connected. It is honest, it is compelling and it is a good insight into the life of a unique author.

Self-Promoting
Revisado: 05-22-16
I recently listened to an audiobook by Chris Anderson entitled, "TED a Talks" & I was spellbound. Akash Karia is no Chris Anderson! This "book" simply is a canned promotional talk that in each chapter unabashedly refers the reader to his website. My advice to those interested in this topic is simply go to the official TED website for specific talks & avoid wasting money on this mountebank.

I downloaded this audio book to listen to while I do my daily workout routine on the elliptical training. I was certainly not disappointed in this fast paced action novel. Although it was released thirteen years ago, it seems to reflect the current geopolitical situation in the Middle East. Very entertaining!
