Historia
The Shadow of the Torturer is the first volume in the four-volume epic, the tale of a young Severian, an apprentice to the Guild of Torturers on the world called Urth, exiled for committing the ultimate sin of his profession - showing mercy towards his victim.
Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun" is one of speculative fiction's most-honored series. In a 1998 poll, Locus Magazine rated the series behind only "The Lord of the Rings" and The Hobbit as the greatest fantasy work of all time.

Wild story
Revisado: 02-09-25
The writing is very strange. It takes a bit to get used to the style but it's extremely enjoyable. I feel I'll listen to it again later and understand totally different things. Excellent world building. And the narration is absolutely on point - Jonathan Davis never ceases to amaze

Awesome world building
Revisado: 02-04-25
Good mixture of hard sci fi, with some fantastical elements, world building, politics, anthropology, this story has it all... If you can suspend disbelief and enjoy it as a nerdy power fantasy story, it's an amazing start to a great series.

Historia
Ataegina was an isolated world of medieval castles, varied cultures, and conquests, vibrant until the demons rose and spread relentless destruction. Swarms of lethal creatures with black husks, murderous claws, barbed tails, and dreaded “tooth-tongues” raged through the lowlands, killing 90 percent of the planet’s population. Terrified survivors fled to hidden mountain keeps where they eke out a meager existence. When a trio of young warriors discovers a new weapon, they see a chance to end this curse. To save humanity, they must fight.

Memorable story
Revisado: 02-04-25
This was quite a unique and memorable take on the Alien franchise. I came for the sci fi horror but stayed for the societal world-building underpinning the narrative. The narrator was awesome as always, love this guy except when he does that whiny teenager accent... still a 10/10 for me

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Actually great
Revisado: 06-16-23
Very rare to read a book that does so well balancing hard sci fi with what I'd call "sci fi nerd fan service" (for lack of a better spoiler free way to describe it). The narrator is somehow believable and "scientific" while telling a story that seems fantastical. You can tell it's strongly rooted in the rules of the real world, but it doesn't hold the author back from creatively applying those rules.
As for the story itself, jeez, what a rollercoaster.
Great story, great narration, great production. You'll wanna read this one up to the end.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Excellent story & narration; poor audio quality
Revisado: 02-03-21
The story was amazing, I was instantly drawn into the quirky dystopian cyberpunk world. Just like any good sci fi the main plot had at least some grounding in reality/history, and extended it with a classic yet original sense of techno-futurism. There was just the right amount of mordant wit and irony to not spoil the realism.
As usual Jonathan Davis did a flawless job narrating this one. Unfortunately the recording was awkwardly low fidelity, it sounds like it was encoded in a low bitrate mp3 in the early 2000s. It was pretty annoying at first although it didn't take long for me to get so caught up in the story that I didn't notice it anymore. Still, considering that this is such a classic of cyberpunk literature, there's no excuse not to update the audio file to a better encoding from the master tapes or at least from a CD version.

Pretty good but story fell off about 3/4 through
Revisado: 04-23-20
I was enjoying this book and its insight into Tarkin as a character. I liked how it didn't really make him likeable but still enjoyable to read from his perspective if that makes sense. But in the latter portion the story just tapered off. And the buildup to the climax/ending were just anticlimactic.

Historia
Deng Xiaoping joined the Chinese Communist movement as a youth and rose in its ranks to become an important lieutenant of Mao's from the 1930s onward. Two years after Mao's death in 1976, Deng became the de facto leader of the Chinese Communist Party and the prime architect of China's post-Mao reforms. Abandoning the Maoist socioeconomic policies he had long fervently supported, he set in motion changes that would dramatically transform China's economy, society, and position in the world. Three decades later we are living with the results.

Narrator was great, very pleasant and at least made an effort to pronounce Chinese names correctly.

So damn good
Revisado: 11-13-18
As for the story, it was a hero's journey like I haven't read since Ender's Game. I won't spoil anything but I loved how the author didn't use random stupid mistakes by the main characters to senselessly and randomly further the plot.
The narrator was absolutely spot-on. Accents were perfect, no cringey try hard voices, everything sounded so natural. Even the singing parts were powerful.
Downloading the sequel right away instead of waiting for next month's credit. Never done this before, it's that good. Listen to this one, fam.

"The Golden Brat", Reinhard von Lohengramm, a military prodigy and admiral of the Galactic Empire, has ambitions beyond protecting the borders or even defeating the empire's enemies. He seeks to overthrow the old order and become a truly absolute - yet benevolent - dictator. His rival, the humble Yang Wen-li of the Free Planets Alliance, wishes to preserve democracy even if he must sacrifice his political ideals to defeat the empire.

Better than the anime
Revisado: 11-04-17
Loved the anime, and the book is even better. it doesn't drag on nearly as bad. My only gripe is the narrator trying to do special voices and accents for every character. It's really cringey. Note to narrators, just read characters in your normal voice.

In his 1988 CBC Massey Lecture, Noam Chomsky inquires into the nature of the media in a political system where the population cannot be disciplined by force and thus must be subjected to more subtle forms of ideological control. Specific cases are illustrated in detail, using the U.S. media primarily but also media in other societies.

Revisado: 04-18-17
Every so often I come across a book that changes the way I see the world. I'm still seeing the same things in the media, but now I have a constant awareness of the potential missing facts in a story. It won't eliminate the box, but it should help you think outside of it.
