Solid idea, failed execution
Revisado: 07-24-21
Solid idea, failed execution.
I wanted to love this book- I'm in a book club. Technically I'm in 7 of them (6 are for work). So a murder that has it's roots in a book club meeting? Here for it. Three very different women, all with a motive to kill, here for it. Plot twists and a timeline that alters between past and present and snippets of a trial? Here for it!
But the book club isn't a real book club. The three women are immature, often stupid, and their motives for anything but murder are murky at best. I have no real sense of why they do anything they do. The men in their lives, even less. The plot twist at the end just had me rolling my eyes. You know what would have made a great plot twist? A better murderer!
The trial was bizarre to say the least. You can’t just randomly accuse pretty much every witness of murder. And what morons are conducting this investigation? How terrible of a lawyer does the main suspect have?
At the end, this was not the book for me. At least I finished it in time to discuss it tonight at book club. I'm definitely interested to hear what my friends think, since a lot of reviewers really seem to have liked this book.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

A Wonderful Tale Made Better By Richard Armitage
Revisado: 12-22-20
Somehow I've never read The Christmas Hirelings, although it's one that I will be re-reading in Christmases to come. Richard Armitage narrates and that just makes a great story even better. This is heart warming and old fashioned charming, and I prefer it over Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol.

Christmas Romance with some Heat
Revisado: 12-22-20
Part cute Christmas romance, part steamy sex, part soap opera (think cat fights and exes showing up constantly). Made for a fun listen, although this is not one I could listen to in the office due to the unexpected bow chicka wow wow sex scenes. Loved the playlist at the end, and will definitely be on the look out for more from this author!

An Angelic What Would You Do?
Revisado: 12-22-20
A short story to remind us all to be a little kinder, but also one that points out the way we treat people. How children are often naturally kind and loving and non-judgmental, how just because you go to church it doesn't mean you truly act in a Godly manner towards people, and how acts of kindness can affect the ones we bestow it on. The narration by Shayna Small was excellent!

Historia
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Loved it!
Revisado: 08-05-20
Like many Hunger Games fans, I was hoping that a prequel would feature Haymitch's story. I was weary of a story that might try to make Snow an anti-hero.
But I decided to trust Collins, and I'm so glad I did!
I loved reading about the the 10th Hunger Games- which are far from the Hunger Games we see Katniss and Peeta competing in. For one, the Capital is still rebuilding and recovering from the war. Snow and his grandmother and cousin live in a grand penthouse apartment, but that is the only remainder of their once grand fortune. When the school that Snow attends decides to use student's as mentors in the Games, Snow knows this is his best chance to win a scholarship to college and rebuild his family's fortunes.
What happens in the 10th Hunger Games is the setup for all the Games to come after. The man Snow will become is shaped by the events, although he is already on that path. Supporting characters Lucy Gray and Sejanus Plinth were, for me, the best part of the book, as they stand in difference to Snow. I honestly would have loved to see their POV's in the book too.
Narrator Santino Fontana was a perfect selection (or did he volunteer?), as nobody can narrate the story of a bad guy trying to pretend he's good as well as Fontana.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Unflinching
Revisado: 08-05-20
We read this for our bookstore's True Crime book club and it made for a great discussion... for those that finished it.
For those that didn't finish the book, their major complaint was that there were too many timelines and too many characters to follow. It's a valid critique, but one that didn't bother me.
Keefe tackles the IRA in modern history- so mostly the 70's up to the 90's. It starts with a kidnapping of a young widow, one that happens in front of her ten children. The disappearance of Jean McConville is then interspersed throughout the rest of the book, as Keefe follows the lives of key IRA members.
The author does a great job of explaining the tensions in Northern Ireland at the time, and in particular how Catholics were treated. He presents it honestly, but never as an excuse for the crimes committed by the IRA and other factions during the time. This can be difficult to read at time- there's murder and bombings, and hunger strikes and forced feedings (the way the Price sisters were forced fed was particularly brutal), and the abuse and poverty McConville's children were forced to endure when their mother disappeared without a trace.
Narrator Matthew Blaney does an incredible job, his Irish accent lending authenticity to the story told. I would definitely recommend him, and I'm planning on checking out his other works!

Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born. Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life.

Historia
When Lewis Barnavelt, an orphan, comes to stay with his Uncle Jonathan, he expects to meet an ordinary person. But he is wrong. Uncle Jonathan and his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann, are both witches! Lewis is thrilled. At first, watching magic is enough. Then Lewis experiments with magic himself and unknowingly resurrects the former owner of the house: a woman named Serenna Izard. It seems that Serenna and her husband built a timepiece into the walls - a clock that could obliterate humankind. And only the Barnavelts can stop it!

I loved this book as a kid, and it's nice to see that it retains the magic even after all these years! Fantastic narration, the only downside is the lack of the Ed Gorey illustrations, but I have a few physical copies of the book too.
