Remember your introduction to stories and to books? For many of us it was listening to someone read to us before we could read for ourselves. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why audio books are popular, especially when presented by a narrator, such as the one of this audio book, who has the talent and voice range to give each character their own distinctive voice, In this case, she helps author Carola Dunn’s story escape bound pages.. Her voice enables each character to speak in this story: featuring a strong, young Regency lady who unwittingly answers a London theatre’s cattle call for opera dancers. We can forgive, at least to a point, when a lord of the realm is attracted to her and decides she may do nicely as his next “cherie amie”. To his credit, when he learns of her current plight-a lady trying to provide for herself and her two young brothers-he comes up with an acceptable solution to each others’ situation: His young nephew needs a tutor and this level-headed young woman seems to have done a bang up job so far as her brothers’ governess. Will she be risking her and her brothers’ safety if she accepts this peer’s offer? Listen - and discover! (R. Blair)
