By interpreting the teachings of Shantideva, Pema Chödrön gracefully, humorously and lovingly walks the listeners through an exploration of how we can pay karmic debt and address habitual, harmful anger. This is the first time I have understood the true meaning of self care, and that it means creating space between ourselves and the rage that can well up inside of us when we feel someone has slighted or harmed us. She explains that to pay karmic debt, we must learn to acknowledge our feelings, to sit in the fire and to have courage to consider the root of our anger and to, in the same moment of harm, extend compassion both to ourselves and to others.

Emily Nunn has taken a courageous journey through her fears and addiction and through her grief for her brother by examining the one thing that keeps her moored: cooking for and with friends. Her fondest memories and even her saddest ones are defined by recipes, scents, and the various textures of dishes that also seem to define the most poignant figures in her life as she seeks to recover from a profound depression and collapse. Her journey is a reminder that we often shoulder the shame of our families’ imperfections but we must, for our own wellbeing, determine when to lay that burden down so that we may move forward and find the love and courage within ourselves and among our connections to find joy in spite of our travails. I recommend this book to anyone who gives a piece of themselves every time they share their cooking and baking with friends or dear family members as a profound demonstration of love.

Vanessa Redgrave's reading of Joan Didion's thorough self-reflection on some of the hardest times in her life carries the reader through the shock of her first loss, her husband, and through the unexpected deterioration of her daughter's health. Didion's reflections pendulum from a forensic analysis to dense and slow grief. Redgrave's narration casts the patterns and cycles of slipping in and out of memory as delicately and profoundly as the waves of Malibu that Didion recalls her daughter used to enthusiastically swim through. I will be listening to this again to fully take it in.
