Historia
“There are two times in a man’s life when he should not speculate,” he wrote. “When he can’t afford it and when he can.” The publishing company Twain owned was failing; his investment in a typesetting device was bleeding red ink. After losing hundreds of thousands of dollars back when a beer cost a nickel, he found himself neck-deep in debt. His heiress wife, Livy, took the setback hard. “I have a perfect horror and heart-sickness over it,” she wrote. “I cannot get away from the feeling that business failure means disgrace.”

Borrrrrrrrrrrring
Revisado: 08-13-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Nope. The book is just nothing more than an extended travelogue. There is nothing extraordinary about Twain's tri that warranted a book or 16 hour listening experience.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story did not need to be told. However, if necessary, then the book should be significantly edited. I reckon 50% could be omitted.
Which scene was your favorite?
None in particular. However, Guidall's delivery made the book palatable.
Was Chasing the Last Laugh worth the listening time?
Nope. I invested a lot of time into this book and kept waiting for it to get good. My expectations were never realized.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

What's the Big Deal
Revisado: 08-13-17
What did you like best about A Man Called Ove? What did you like least?
The writing was just bland and the sentence structure was extremely annoying. There is nothing I liked about this book.
Would you recommend A Man Called Ove to your friends? Why or why not?
No. This book is incredibly overrated. I so wanted to like this book. However, there really is nothing special here.
What about George Newbern’s performance did you like?
I like George Newbrrn as a narrator. He was stupendous as the narrator of Seabiscuit. Unfortunately, he was the wrong voice for this book. A Man Called Ove really needed an older gruffer voice.
Do you think A Man Called Ove needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Most certainly not. There is nothing special here. Save your token.

Historia
1936 was a great year for the movie industry - the financial setbacks of the Great Depression were subsiding, so theater attendance was up. Americans everywhere were watching the stars, and few stars shined as brightly as one of America's most enduring screen favorites, Mary Astor. But Astor's personal story wasn't a happy one. Born poor and widowed at 24, Mary Astor had spent years looking for stability when she met and wed Dr. Franklyn Thorpe.

Where does The Purple Diaries rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I would place this book in the top third of all of the books I have listened to.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Purple Diaries?
Listen to lawyers fight was amusing. The sounded like 2 blowhards in the audio version. I bet they must have been quite a spectacle at the time of the trial.
Which scene was your favorite?
Not really a scene, rather just the final chapters. the author does a really nice job of answering the reader's logic question, "...and then what happened?"
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I had a strong reaction to Dr. Thorpe and Mary Astor. They both came across as childish and somewhat unlikable.
Any additional comments?
This author does a very good job of wrapping up loose ends and letting the reader know what happened to everyone mentioned in the book long after the trial ended.

Ruso, once again pulled into a murder investigation, is appalled to find that Tilla is still spending time with the prime suspect.

Worthy Follow-up to the First Book
Revisado: 06-10-17
Would you listen to Terra Incognita again? Why?
Most definitely. Lots of rich characters keep the readers engaged and entertained.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was very good. The mystery of how Tilla came to become a slave is revealed, which was very satisfying.
What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?
Another fantastic performance. Every Vance narration is a treat.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was moved to anger when Tilla spent the night with her ex-boyfriend. I am still steamed over it!
Any additional comments?
There as not as many chuckles in the second book. However, it is still an excellent story and well worth listening to. I will definitely listen to the 3rd book in the series.

A Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 06-10-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Medicus to be better than the print version?
Most definitely. Simon Vance provides such rich cadence to the voice of each character. He really brings them all to life in a way that I did not quite imagine while reading the book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Medicus?
I don't want to give away anything. However, let's just say that the ending is quite satisfying.
Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favorite?
The Medicus, of course. He would make for an amusing character on film.
Who was the most memorable character of Medicus and why?
The penny pinching hospital administrator who serves as the Medicus' nemesis. Great, great character.
Any additional comments?
Listen to this book, you won't be disappointed. I have already gone ahead and purchased the next 2 in the series.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Historia
Twain's classic novel tells the story of a teenaged misfit who finds himself floating on a raft down the Mississippi River with an escaping slave, Jim. In the course of their perilous journey, Huck and Jim meet adventure, danger, and a cast of characters who are sometimes menacing and often hilarious. Underlying Twain's good humor is a dark subcurrent of Antebellum cruelty and injustice that makes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a frequently funny book with a serious message.

Visit With My Old Friend Huck finn
Revisado: 03-06-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
You can't go wrong with Mark Twain!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?
Oh my goodness Jim's recounting of how he came to learn that his young daughter was deaf is so touching. Your heart just breaks for Jim and you want to console him. Jim just comes across as such a good soul.
Which character – as performed by Robin Field – was your favorite?
By far Jim. I've read the The Adventures of Huck Finn in the past and loved it. However, Robin Fields portrayal of the characters adds such a deeper dimension to all of them. I appreciate the character of Jim much more after hearing him come to life through Robin Field's interpretation.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I just really enjoyed it. It's been 30 years since I read the book in school. I had forgotten so much. It was like becoming reacquainted with an old friend.
Any additional comments?
This is the second book I have listened to which was narrated by Robin Field. Each of the chapter numbers he announces in his own voice. Then a moment later he transitions to the dialect of multiple characters from the region. The contrast from his real voice is impressive. Robin Field is really a talented narrator.
