Historia
Rex Fortescue, king of a financial empire, was sipping tea in his "counting house" when he suffered an agonizing and sudden death. On later inspection, the pockets of the deceased were found to contain traces of cereals. Yet, it was the incident in the parlor that confirmed Miss Marple's suspicion that here she was looking at a case of crime by rhyme....

way better narrator than Emilia Fox
Revisado: 05-02-25
I wish the whole series was narrated by the narrator of this book. He is much better than Emilia Fox, though she is not terrible.

I love Peter Grainger, and this book is no different. The worst part is that I now have to wait awhile until the next book!

Historia
She's just watching, thinking about it again, when a big flash car pulls up outside. No one gets out. Then the doors of the bar open and people appear. Two men and a youngish woman, and one of the men has a hold on the woman's arm. It looks as if they're having words. Then this all happens quickly—they push the woman towards the car, one of the back doors opens, and they manhandle her inside. Sarah hears a muffled shout from the woman and the car pulls away. It's all over in a few seconds.

Always refreshing to return to a Grainger novel
Revisado: 10-19-24
I've been listening to the Adam Dalgliesh series by P. D. James, and while the scene building is nice, it can drone on and on. Grainger is so good and building suspense but not waiting so long to reach the climax it becomes annoying and tedious. The only thing I didn't like about this novel was that it was so short. I can only hope the follow up will be released soon!

Historia
When ex-detective inspector Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, author Anthony Horowitz, are invited to an exclusive literary festival on Alderney, an idyllic island off the south coast of England, they don’t expect to find themselves in the middle of murder investigation - or to be trapped with a cold-blooded killer in a remote place with a murky, haunted past.

Why does Anthony seem so inept and insecure all the time?
Revisado: 08-02-24
I've listened to the first two books and now this one, and I'm struck by how dumb Horowitz portrays himself to be. For someone who wrote a very convincing pastiche of Sherlock Holmes, he is not dumb. I understand it's fiction, but he is overplaying his stupidity. I get the analogy to Sherlock and Watson with the relationship between Hawthorne and Horowitz, but at least Doyle didn't make Watson so insufferably insecure about being less intelligent than Holmes. It's getting difficult to overlook Horowitz's portrayal of his own malignant idiocy.. I will stick with it in the hopes the next books are better in that regard.

not sure I'll finish..
Revisado: 08-03-23
I'm on chapter 7 and usually with Ellis's books SOMETHING has happened by now. But I'm seriously considering not finishing. I wish there was a summary online, but it's just too boring and drawn out. And getting real tired of the same villain lurking in the background (despite it not being mentioned by chapter 7 I'm fairly certain I already know who it is). this is rural England FFS, just give me charming crime stories with a couple twists and an explanatory ending. but no, it has to be drawn out from hell to creation with only beautiful people and NO RORY yet? this one was a swing and a miss. I think I'll return to Peter Grainger books for awhile

Narrator is phenomenal!
Revisado: 08-01-23
Others have complained about the narrator's pronunciation, and I have noticed that she mispronounces some words. I think that can be forgiven for three reasons. 1) she may have never encountered these words in a setting where she is both hearing them pronounced and seeing them spelled, as it's uncommon words that she usually mispronounces. 2) she is British and many listeners are American, so we yanks may not know how the words are pronounced in Britain, yet the narrator is, in fact, pronouncing them correctly. and 3) her range of voices is so vast that the few mispronounced words are easy to forgive. She is an incredible narrator, in my opinion better than Richard Armitage in the DI Jackman series, so it is easy to forgive a momentary mispronunciation when 99.9% of the book is narrated flawlessly and as if it were an ensemble cast. Also, someone said she has an annoying lisp, but I've listened to a dozen books of hers and I've never noticed any lisp or mouth noises, and I am incredibly sensitive to any kind of mouth noise. I think, given this isn't a common complaint and one I don't have myself, it could've been a stereo issue, something to do with the speakers that person had.
I love Joy Ellis, and this book was great, though I do think her story lines are becoming a bit predictable. Not surprising given the speed with which she pumps out books, but they are entertaining and engrossing nonetheless. I'll continue listening to every book she releases, especially if they are narrated by Henrietta Meire!

I liked it.. buut
Revisado: 09-07-21
I liked it, but it is kinda starting to feel like the same book over and over again. Yes, the nuances of the themes are different, but the themes and rhythms are increasingly similar. this book was like a mashup of different events from previous books. and yet, I gave it 4 stars. I still stayed up all night listening to it because I had to know what happened.

Peter Grant is facing fatherhood, and an uncertain future, with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with émigré Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner's brand new London start up - the Serious Cybernetics Company. Drawn into the orbit of Old Street's famous "silicon roundabout", Peter must learn how to blend in with people who are both civilians and geekier than he is.

What even is Peter Grant if not a constable?!?!?!
Revisado: 07-13-21
Ok, I'll admit I'm only just starting the book, but honestly, I almost didn't even bother. Half the allure of the Peter Grant series was the addition of police procedural to urban fantasy. Otherwise, he's just another Alex Verus, etc. etc. I truly hope the jokes on me and that he's doing deep under cover work, because honestly it's just not the same series if he's not a cop, and one I'm not totally interested in anymore. Pity

My name is Peter Grant, and I am a keeper of the secret flame - whatever that is. Truth be told, there's a lot I still don't know. My superior Nightingale, previously the last of England's wizardly governmental force, is trying to teach me proper schooling for a magician's apprentice. But even he doesn't have all the answers. Mostly I'm just a constable sworn to enforce the Queen’s Peace, with the occasional help from some unusual friends and a well-placed fire blast.

Wow!! I did NOT see that coming!! I downloaded the next novel before this one was done, I've been trying to stick to the internal timeline but I'm so sure that those stories will only have hints at the larger story that I'm going straight to the next novel, and believe me I'll skip that too if it doesn't pick up where this one left off!

Good reading, imo
Revisado: 04-25-21
Stephen Fry is decent with his reading, and what more could one ask for with the entire collection of Holmes (that's out of copyright) included with Audible? granted, I've never heard anyone else narrate holmes, and am buying Charlton Griffins version simply for the Casebook, but still Fry's rendition is palatable for the price ;)
