Each is a page-turner
Revisado: 04-25-25
Four mysteries, each a page-turner. When scenes change, you easily understand the geographical location and which characters are involved. Many surprises, both good and bad, along the way.

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

History made interesting
Revisado: 11-02-24
Definitely too long, but beautifully done. It focuses the listener or reader on the inequities that began with slavery through today. It also points out how the US has benefited from these inequities. Worthwhile.

Facts are so refreshing
Revisado: 09-26-24
This book, in an easy to follow manner, does describe Donald Trump’s finances from the first gift from his father to multimillion dollar fines levied against him in 2023-2024. Regarding all the deals he considered great at signing, it turns out that most were poor business decisions.

The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

Long, but worthwhile
Revisado: 07-24-24
Tolstoy novels have many characters, each with 4 or 5 names it seems. It was not too difficult to understand what was going on. And what was going on was constantly interesting. A classic, beautifully written.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

A Truly Great Human Being
Revisado: 07-02-24
Listening to this book was as if Tony Fauci was sitting in my living room telling me about the pandemics, near pandemics, and flops he had experienced. Always a doctor first and an administrator second, third, or fourth.

Historia
Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming.

Interesting anecdotes
Revisado: 06-08-24
Perhaps I am too politically knowledgeable to gain a great deal from this book. The anecdotes were interesting, and if that was the objective, it succeeded. Otherwise, at least orally, there seemed to be no organization. The dates and topics seemed to be constantly jumping around.
