Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

I was riveted to this story
Revisado: 09-26-24
Character driven.I loved these boys and as they were underdogs, I like this kind of competition. No violence, no contact, and the cruel narrative of the German torture taking place behind the scenes, increased my desire for the boys to win. Great historical event where Americans worked exceedingly hard at a sport to bring home the Gold. I would like more books and movies like this one.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Excellent, page Turner, interesting characters both good and bad. Narrator was very good. I like his books even though the violence is too graphic for me, he doesn't use filthy unnecessary language. I learned about Dixie Mafia which Was new to me.

Historia
In a manner evoking Ian McEwan's Atonement and Nick Hornby's About a Boy, acclaimed author Joyce Maynard weaves a beautiful, poignant tale of love, sex, adolescence, and devastating treachery as seen through the eyes of a young teenage boy - and the man he later becomes - looking back at an unexpected encounter that begins one single, long, hot, life-altering weekend.

Excellent writing of Great Story
Revisado: 02-09-22
At first, I wasn't sure this book would hold my attention, but it was not long before the escaped convict hooked me with his story and I could see why she fell in love with him. Written from a young boy's POV created more tension - would he or would he not turn Frank in to the police. A good read. I recommend it.

Honest true life story
Revisado: 10-05-21
I am a fan of Rick Bragg and have read several of his books. I listened to this one and found it as good as the others. He wrote about a dog but also the relationships between a dog and the people in his life, a dog and the animals in his life, and we find that Bragg has a soft spot for dogs. He rescues this dog that is in bad shape. In fact, Bragg is not sure the dog will make it, but with care and attention from him and his mother, Speck becomes part of the family even though he is a "terrible dog" who gets into fights, tries to herd a mule and causes much trouble. Once again we see Rick Bragg's people and learn of the troubles his loved ones face. We see how his brother finally warms to this dog he thought was a terrible dog and Bragg's mother talks to the dog like he was a child.
I fell in love with Speck and felt the love that we dog lovers have for our four-footed friends. This is a gritty book in ways, but is also a lovely and touching book. I will likely listen to it again soon.

1986, Mobile, Alabama. A 14-year-old girl is awakened by the unmistakable sound of gunfire. On the front lawn, her father has shot and killed her mother before turning the gun on himself. Allison Moorer would grow up to be an award-winning musician, with her songs likened to "a Southern accent: eight miles an hour, deliberate, and very dangerous to underestimate" (Rolling Stone).

Honest true life story
Revisado: 11-07-20
This book moved smoothly and quickly as the story unfolded and brought me to tears at times. What a true and painful image of child abuse and domestic abuse by a father and husband. The narrator did an excellent job of keeping the reader involved and the author has presented the type of memoir that informs and entertains. I have recommended this book to others.

I like Myles Pollard as narrator. The tension kept me listening as I visited this place so like the setting for McLeod's Daughters. The characters were authentic and the language was clean, unlike so many modern books. I will listen to more books by Sarah Williams and narrated by Miles Pollard.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

The Life of a Movie Star is Not What I thought
Revisado: 02-28-19
I found it interesting that Rob Lowe knew when he was a child that he wanted to be an actor and went after his dream with determination. I like that he was always appreciative of what others did for him, the opportunities he was given.
If someone enjoys reading about the way Hollywood works, the ups and downs, the roller coaster emotional journey of actors, they will like this book. Rob Lowe is a fantastic narrator. I will listen to other books he narrates. I highly recommend this book.

Revisado: 02-23-19
One of the best memoirs and best narrated books I have heard. Sally Field was a huge movie star to me even when she did not see herself that way. She answers all the questions I wondered about, and surprised me with her personal tragedies while impressing me with her strength and determination. This is a book I recommend to anyone who enjoys memoir.

Historia
November 1958, New York. Into the rarefied atmosphere of wealth and tradition at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden comes the most unlikely of horses—a drab white former plow horse named Snowman—and his rider, Harry de Leyer. They were the longest of all longshots—and their win was the stuff of legend.

Excellent Performance of Uplifting Story
Revisado: 01-28-19
I felt like I was a part of Harry's life, like I was riding Snowman over the hurdles and suffered every defeat. But I had faith in the big gray horse and knew Harry would succeed in making him a champion.
The narrator did a fabulous job of keeping me wanting more. When Snowman had to be put down, I cried. Like Harry, when my 32 year old mare was euthanized I did not want to be there. This book kept me enthralled from beginning to end.
