Historia
Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

Best book I have listen to ever...
Revisado: 07-13-23
I love reading/listening to history books. Ron Chernow and Joyce Kern Goodwin I have always considered the best in the field. I leaned Jonathan Eig is better. His access to new material made King a person not an icon. Not to be overshadowed Dion Graham's narration which was riveting. The teamwork of these two talented men, made the March on Washington one of the most memorable listens ever. In fact it could be a stand alone play if they could find other actors on par with Graham.
A must listen!

Historia
A legendary diplomat, scholar, and civil rights leader, Ralph Bunche was one of the most prominent Black Americans of the twentieth century. The first African American to obtain a political science Ph.D. from Harvard and a celebrated diplomat at the United Nations, he was once so famous he handed out the Best Picture award at the Oscars. Yet today Ralph Bunche is largely forgotten. In The Absolutely Indispensable Man, Kal Raustiala restores Bunche to his rightful place in history.

Best book I have listened to in a while!
Revisado: 04-07-23
A great book. Great narrator and subject. Clearly an indispensable man, a man I knew nothing about. He was present at so many important moments. A great education on post war diplomacy. I have been pestering my family to read it so we can talk about it. Generally the book has to be amazing for me to pester them.
Everyone interested in 20th Century history should read it.

Love this book!
Revisado: 09-30-21
I am a Rick Bragg fan. Find his voice soothing as he tells his family tales. Add dogs to it, and I am a goner! Especially moved by a naughty dog showing so much empathy, rings true with my dog, but it was very moving. (don't want to give anything away)
Speck is a good boy and this book is a great listen.

Multiple first person stories build the narrative.
Revisado: 08-30-21
The performance of the narrators emphasized Leah Weiss' structures for the tale. introducing characters giving them small climactic events before they become background characters. Often a voice would appear after figure had be described by others, adding nuances of character development, even if it only made them more despicable.

Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

In these troubled times, I found solace in the people Wilkerson followed. She made their struggles, challenges, and successes so immediate that I found myself rooting and cheering for them. These are the people that make this country great!

Great story lots of twists and surprises. Of course it is rather timely, although I hope not everything comes to happen in real life. The performer made a good story into an exceptional listen.

Historia
In Dark Towers, award-winning journalist David Enrich reveals the truth about Deutsche Bank and its epic path of devastation. Tracing the bank's history back to its propping up of a default-prone American developer in the 1880s, helping the Nazis build Auschwitz, and wooing Eastern Bloc authoritarians, he shows how in the 1990s, via a succession of hard-charging executives, Deutsche made a fateful decision to pursue Wall Street riches, often at the expense of ethics and the law.

well reported, riveting but appalling
Revisado: 03-14-20
I would say I enjoyed it but Deutsche Bank acted so badly that enjoy it not the right word. The story was well put together so I would say the story was riveting. The parts about Donnie have been reported elsewhere but again it was concise and clear.
As an American you should read this book but enjoy it not so much.

Historia
Here is an extraordinary portrait of one of the most complicated - and misunderstood - figures among the Founding Fathers. In 1804, while serving as vice president, Aaron Burr fought a duel with his political nemesis, Alexander Hamilton, and killed him. In 1807, he was arrested, tried, and acquitted of treason. In 1833, Burr is newly married, an aging statesman considered a monster by many. But he is determined to tell his own story, and he chooses to confide in a young New York City journalist. Burr is the first novel in Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire series.

A welcome addition to the world of Audible
Revisado: 08-01-19
I have been waiting for years for Gore Vidal's historical novels to come to Audible. These were some of my favorite books when I was in my 20's. His irreverence to our founding fathers appealed to me. 30 years later the snark got a little too much. Poor George Washington takes a beating as does Jefferson (who I still feel deserves it). That said, what a great book. Vidal's play with words and his erudition make listening a treat. Grover Gardner captures all of the characters with his different voices. Looking forward to the rest of Gore Vidal's historical sagas!

Revisado: 07-10-19
What a great book. Just to make sure I got all of the splendid information, I listened to it twice, which is my ultimate compliment. If one is interested in where their family pooch came from, this is a must read! Genetics is a complex subject and I think I actually got it. The only flaw is....He did not write about Welsh Springer Spaniels, my true love!
