Historia
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office?

Less a history book, more a discourse on feminism

Wonderful to hear an author read in her own voice, but many assertions lacked evidence-- maybe there are annotations in the print version? The amount of times Hillary Clinton was mentioned in a book about ancient egypt was surprising. I enjoyed the theories about the female kings but wish more source material was provided.

Great narration of a wonderfuly personal biography of the great Mexica lords. Highly recommend this book not only for the historical knowledge but also the inclusion of poetry and cultural insights. There are a few lines that are... less than ideal (i.e. "one thing lead to another" in regards to men commiting crimes against women, and certainly nobody today would point to executing one's gay son as a point of moral fortitude) but I attribute that to this being published in the 90s. Other than that and overall, a very good read.
