Historia
Wallace Stegner's uniquely American classic centers on Lyman Ward, a noted historian who relates a fictionalized biography of his pioneer grandparents at a time when he has become estranged from his own family. Through a combination of research, memory, and exaggeration, Ward voices ideas concerning the relationship between history and the present, art and life, parents and children, and husbands and wives.

Irritating reader; obnoxious “heroine”
Revisado: 04-12-25
I was absolutely put off by Bramhall’s reading of this story: the pretentious voice he used was so irritating that I had to will myself to continue listening. Susan Ward is painted as just an absolute snob and social climber — she has pure disdain for her husband, her environment and pretty much everyone she regards as her social inferior. It was a relief to finally be done with this particular section.

Historia
The assumptions and obsessions that control our daily lives are explored in tantalizing detail by master novelist John Updike in this wise, witty, sexy story. Harry Angstrom - known to all as Rabbit, one of America's most famous literary characters - finds his dreary life shattered by the infidelity of his wife. How he resolves - or further complicates - his problems makes a compelling listen.

Historia
Morgan Gower is bored of the tedium of his ordinary life: of his job as manager of a run-down hardware store; of his wife; of his "industriously dull" daughters; of his mother; of his sister. But Morgan's secret escape lies in a box filled with costumes, filled with everything from a fake beard to Napoleon's tricorne to Daniel Boone, all of which provide an outlet away from his life and into the identity of someone who is assuredly not Morgan Gower.

Outstanding
Revisado: 06-11-23
Nathan Osgood is such a great choice to read Anne Tyler books with a male as central character! Loved this audio version as much as I love the traditional text of this book.

Here are two sisters: One trades self-respect for a wealthy husband while the other finds in the pages of a book a kindred spirit who changes her life. The janitor at the local school has his faith tested in an encounter with an isolated man he has come to help; a grown daughter longs for mother love even as she comes to accept her mother's happiness in a foreign country; and the adult Lucy Barton (the heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton, the author's celebrated New York Times best seller) returns to visit her siblings after 17 years of absence.

Wonderful stories and a fantastic reader
Revisado: 11-06-22
Kimberly Farr, as usual, does a great job of reading Elizabeth Strout’s novels. Anyone familiar with A Spoon River Anthology will be reminded of it with this one, as the characters will appear in one another’s vignettes. Highly recommend!
