worse narration ever
Revisado: 11-25-23
I did my best to like this book, because I planned to listen to it on a long drive ... but I don't think I got past a chapter or two, because the narration is so awful. I've never heard worse. In addition, the background music -, why was it even necessary to have background music - was too loud. The narrator stumbles over words that are not difficult to pronounce, it sounds like there was no practice or effort prior to recording... that it's a cold read. Narration makes it extremely difficult to understand the story. I wanted to return it and get my money back but I couldn't figure out how to do it. So I'll suck this up as a lesson learned to never get this narrator again.

Historia
When Amos Decker is called to South Florida to investigate a double homicide, the case appears straightforward: A federal judge and her bodyguard have been found dead, the judge’s face sporting a blindfold with two eye holes crudely cut out, a clear sign that she’d made one too many enemies over her years on the bench. What at first seems cut and dry is anything but: Not only did the judge have more enemies than Decker can count—from violent gang members, drug dealers, and smugglers to a resentful ex-husband—but the bodyguard presents additional conundrums that muddy the waters even further.

Glitch in narration
Revisado: 12-02-22
I love the Memory Man series. And I enjoyed this book...mostly.
However there is a glitch in my narration that I'm sure the author and the publisher did not put there.
Specifically in Chapters 85,86, 88, 89, and 94 ( and probably more) the word A$$wipe randomly pops up.
I found this to be distracting and did detract from my enjoyment of the book. I did report this issue to Audible, and hopefully no one else will have this glitch.

Really Awful Narration
Revisado: 09-04-19
I love the "In Death" Series by J. D. Robb. I have read all 47 prior to "Connections in Death." I decided to give the audible version a try. Bad decision on my part.
The story probably deserves a higher ranking, but the narration was so disturbing that I had trouble following the story plot. The narrator was clear enough, but her voice characterization was woefully off. Here are just a few examples:
Rourke sounded like Chief O'Hara on the TV "Batman" series. Rourke has a hint of Irish in his voice, not a whopping big dollop of a brogue. Susan Ericksen should have gone more for the Irish tones of Pierce Brosnan, Richard Harris, or Peter O'Toole.
Dallas sounded uncouth. True enough, she is brash and rude at times. But she has learned in the past 47 books how to cope with ...and learn to befriend...a variety of people. She is loved and respected. The narration was very one note: I' sure the intent was to make Dallas sound tough and competent, but she sounded mean, angry, and unlikable. Dallas is more like the character Kate Beckett on the TV series "Castle" not Ma Barker.
Peabody was born and raised in Arizona to New-Age pacifist parents. The narrator makes her sound like an unintelligent bumpkin, when she is efficient, dependable, dutiful, and has a sense of humor. She is almost always the "good cop" in interviews because she relates to people, and her inherent kindness shines through. None of these characteristics were evident.
I wished many times that I could turn off the narration and just read the book, but could not. So disappointing.

Novel's narrator not nifty
Revisado: 06-15-18
It is a good story. But the narration was distracting, which is not a good thing in an audio book. The background noise sometimes sounded like the book was recorded in a restaurant kitchen with clinking pots and pans; or had music that added nothing to the narration or story line; or blissful silence...there was no consistency. The narrator, Mr. Deaver Brown, has a unique voice and delivery. Perhaps he had a bad case of indigestion which made the words and phrasing poorly spaced, sometimes slurred, and occasionally mispronounced. Maybe he was tired and on the verge of yawning constantly. I know he has narrated many books, and so I am willing to assume that he can be quite good...but, based on this book, I will avoid buying books narrated by Mr. Brown.
