Masterful Great Storytelling and Sharply Written Characters
Revisado: 10-01-24
I don’t review much, but this trilogy was absolutely perfect. More gangster than gangster and written with restraint by a very steady hand. I had no idea who Don Winslow was, but he’s impacted me and impressed me greatly. Danny Ryan is a legendary character and I could not recommend every book in this trilogy more. Phenomenal. The writing and the performance are perfection.

Two criminal empires together control all of New England. Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire. I am not sure I’ve ever binged a book this quickly. Winslow writes without fluff and with all heart. Characters are many and built with care. This is an excellent crime story. Highest recommendation.

Paul Sparks is fantastic and so is this book
Revisado: 04-21-23
Completely disagree with reviewers saying the narration is bad. I think it’s some of the best “acting” in an audiobook reading I’ve ever heard. His ability to draw you in with the different character voices is phenomenal. His voice is just low in parts…on purpose and for effect.
The book itself is his best since “Revival.” Billy Summers is alive on the page. I’m very much looking forward to the film.

Historia
A young boy is found horribly murdered in a mock crucifixion. Is the murderer the elderly woman who witnessed the crime? A neurologist who can no longer bear the pain life inflicts on its victims? A psychiatrist with a macabre sense of humor and a guilty secret? A mysterious mental patient, locked in silent isolation? Lieutenant Kinderman follows a bewildering trail that links all these people, confronting a new enigma at every turn even as more murders surface. Why does each victim suffer the same dreadful mutilations? Why are two of the victims priests?

A Favorite
Revisado: 04-07-23
Bill Kinderman is an all time favorite character. His philosophical musings are the sweet spot in William Peter Blatty’s beautiful prose. The best parts of the Exorcist and Legion are the human parts. He writes characters that are so alive they remind you of people you know and love. Kinderman plays it humble and hapless when he speaks to people and my favorite parts of him on the page are when I have no idea where he’s going and why and then, boom he’s got em. This book is not scary per say, but more of a commentary and reflection on the nature of man and good and evil itself. Both endings of The Exorcist and Legion are masterful in my humble opinion. I loved the narrator and I loved this book. Hoorah for Karamazov.

Historia
When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Yet despite Ludlow's tranquility, there's an undercurrent of danger that lingers...like the graveyard in the woods near the Creeds' home, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets.

This Audiobook is King
Revisado: 02-28-19
As a ten year old boy I saw the 1989 film and it rattled me. I’ve been a fan of King’s books since I read the first four Dark Tower Series books as a teen and waited for the next three until I was a young man, reading plenty of his other works while I waited on them. I never read Pet Semetary though, because I’ve never had the attention it takes to read something you know the outcome for.
I have begun writing my own dark tales so I wanted to read his scariest works, this and The Shining (I’ve seen that film many times, and the ABC miniseries). I wanted to pay attention to the craft here. Oh boy, am I glad I did. These characters live in his words, especially Judd (for me anyways). Michael C. Hall has read superbly here, bringing each of these characters to the path (or the “rudd”)in a way that hasn’t been matched for me regarding audiobooks.
I highly recommend.
