Poor narration, unrealistic resolutions

While I thought the writing spent too much space explaining various circumstances rather than letting the dialogue do more work, especially in the beginning, the real annoyance for me was the narration. It began as just a flat reading of the page but it became truly distracting when the written words indicated a Southern, Appalachian accent. Oh my! Listeners from the South must be disgusted. It's hard to believe Baldacci would have approved this narrator.

I'm a devoted fan of Ann Patchett's writing: The Dutch House, Bel Canto, Commonwealth, State of Wonder, and others. I loved them, and even though the author doesn't write a happy ending, it feels somewhat true to life.

This one is dfferent. I had great hopes for this story until the end of the book was approaching and it seemed there was too much to put in any order. Her final "trick" reminded me of the cartoon of the student with a complex math proof on the board and one section that reads "then a miracle occurs." So there's that, and then a few more paragraphs, and then there's no next paragraph. It's just weird.

And that awful jarring music! How could the audio producer have thought THAT was a good idea?

I expected to like this as much as Holmes' earlier book but was disappointed. For me it had lots and lots and lots of light romantic comedy angst-happyish-angst-happyish and a very thin plot. I listened all the way through but was glad it was over.

I was unexpectedly captivated by the stories in this collection. The book was recommended by Maureen Corrigan on the Fresh Air podcast so I gave it a try. In spite of my having almost no connection with Korean culture, the lives of these characters seemed relatable and the descriptions and thoughts drew me into the past, present, and sometimes, the imagined future of my new acquaintences. I especially liked "Map of the Simplified World" and "The Art of Losing." These were not the same stories Corrigan highlighted so there is much here for everyone.

I took one star off "performance" only because in the first one or two stories the characters sounded so completely American with no hint of accent that they seemed miscast. In hindsight this was perhaps intentional. Maybe a re-listen would change my mind.

This selection was well worth my monthly Audible credit. Try it!

While I love the Hercule Poirot mysteries, the audio quality of this collection doesn't lend itself well to ear buds. I was misled by the release date of 2017. I should have realized they were recorded far earlier; in fact 40-50 years ago. There are ear-assaulting changes in volume along with very loud and odd music between some scenes. I do not recommend these old radio dramas for anyone listening on ear buds.

It was interesting to hear Fuller speak about her life and her writing outside the confines of the published memoir. I have read/listened to four of her memoirs and greatly enjoyed each. Here she seemed more assertive than I expected but every bit as interesting. I have not read Wendy Kann's book yet but plan to. I do wish the recording equipment had been better.

After listening to Fuller read "Travel Light, Move Fast" I could not help being disappointed by the narrator here. The accent seemed wrong, and the odd pauses and, especially, the singing just put me off. Others will certainly disagree.

I did truly enjoy the story though. I have read three of Fuller's other books and this one pulls a lot of that history together from her mother's perspective but seen through the author's eyes.

The coincidences in 19th century novels are unconvincing today but still this story pulled me in. The best part for me was the excellent narrator: the unique character voices, the total immersion in the story, the French! So impressive. Five stars are insufficient.

I could not get past the rasping whisper of the narrator which was just annoying. The story had promise but the burdened adjectives describing every blasted thing had me aching for some non-fiction..

Unlikable characters, long repetitive sentences, disgusting midlife behaviors. For those reviewers who found this "genious," good for you for finding value that completely eluded me.
