Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

I hated the narrator… at first
Revisado: 12-31-23
I wasn’t in love with the narrator in the first chapter or so as she has that nasally voice that’s pretty common with young adult novels, but… she’s actually really good. Emotions are portrayed exceptionally and with poignant precision.
As for the story? I liked it! I usually listen to audiobooks while driving to and from work, rarely breaching the “home zone.” But I found myself listening to nearly half the book as I ran around to do laundry and my nails and just about any activity that didn’t require my full attention. I’d recommend this novel to everyone who likes fantasy/distopian mishmash. Oh. And dragons. Parts were severely predictable, so I’d label this as an “easy” read, but man… there’s a space for “easy” novels. I Just mean that it’s great for listening while doing other things — nothing too complicated that can’t be followed if you’re not paying attention.
…well, off to go listen to the second part!

I can’t even finish this one, I’m sorry. The narrators sound like robots. Just awful.

A lovely time travel romance
Revisado: 09-02-21
This is such a sweet story about one man’s journey after divorce. The characters are so likeable and pleasant, especially Jaime who does everything in his power to make things “right” and “good.”
I honestly didn’t know what to expect as I’m not into time travel OR romance. While both are present, they’re a complement to the story of Jaime, which was most important for me. The author did a great job considering the paradoxes and anomalies bound to happen when you mess with the flow of time and came to a happy ending for nearly everyone in the story, which I appreciated.
Loved the narrator, too. His voice is compelling, soft, and suited to the main character very well. There were no over-the-top voices drawing you out of the story, transitions are smooth, and the quality is very nice. A great purchase, overall!

Historia
Fatima lives in the city of Noor, a thriving stop along the Silk Road. There the music of myriad languages fills the air, and people of all faiths weave their lives together. However, the city bears scars of its recent past, when the chaotic tribe of Shayateen djinn slaughtered its entire population - except for Fatima and two other humans. Now ruled by a new maharajah, Noor is protected from the Shayateen by the Ifrit, djinn of order and reason, and by their commander, Zulfikar. But when one of the most potent of the Ifrit dies, Fatima is changed in ways she cannot fathom....

I couldn’t get through listening to this because of the narrator. The story is intriguing, but I’m going to have to buy a physical copy. The audiobook is so mechanical and sleep-inducing. So sorry.

Gaaahhhhhh!!!!
Revisado: 06-27-18
Okay. I just finished this book while sitting at my desk at work, and I feel like subsequently kicking my coworker in the face and shaking them while sobbing. I mean, I’m not particularly fond of this person, but it’s usually not this bad between us. I seriously just went through a ride in a plane and got pushed out without a chute. I need MORE!
So there obviously has to be another book coming in the series. It’s not exactly unpredictable, but full of tiny surprises in the means to the ends. Yes: there are lots of “ends.” I don’t even want to write a true review as I simply cannot without going through 1,000 spoilers.
Just. Read. It. (Or listen to it...)

Excellent Learning Program
Revisado: 04-15-11
I will have to say that I was very skeptical about this program at first, but Pimsleur has definitely converted me! By unit 17 of phase 2, I was able to converse with a couple from Germany. Mind you, I do not have a
FULL vocabulary, but the couple said that my pronunciation was like that of a native speaker. Granted, I do spend more time than the program recommends per day and have had to repeat some units, but to be able to be understood by a non-English speaker after only roughly six months TOTAL (including this program and others) is impressive. Of these programs, I have used the Pimsleur program for about four of these months. I can speak better German than I can Spanish, of which I had four years of formal study.
