Good Story. Disappointing narration.
Revisado: 05-11-20
I think this was going to be a good story. Unfortunately I'll never know as I couldn't get through the first few chapters because of the poor narration. Odd accent, short, staccato delivery.

Enjoyable. Very good story. Narrator is very talented however I thought that since the protagonist is a young person, a younger voice should have been used. No complaints otherwise.

Excellent story and the narrator was able to voice a variety of characters. Both male and female roles were well done.

This was a fun listen. It begins as an almost Dickensian tale about an orphzn boy. But then tosses in fantasy magic. Great characters and plot.
The narration was brilliant! Looking fwd to book 2!

"Keep calm and carry on." That's what Katherine Bateson's father told her, and that's what she's trying to do: when her father goes off to the war, when her mother sends Kat and her brother and sister away from London to escape the incessant bombing, even when the children arrive at Rookskill Castle, an ancient, crumbling manor on the misty Scottish highlands.

Loved the narration!!!
Revisado: 02-22-18
I listened to this and it an interesting story. It's about some kids who are moved to a private academy to get them away from the horrors of WW2. Interesting characters, a nice mystery and sinister magic to boot! Im hoping there's a sequel because I think theres an opportunity for one.
But my favorite part was listening to the narrator Fiona Hardingham! Ms Fiona was so enchanting as she told this story. Her crisp, soft accent wove a spell over me and i just loved it! (I must admit to listening to this 3 times). Come to find out shes won awards for her voicework.
The book went on a couple of chapters longer than it needed to, but that doesn't hurt it too badly. Give it a listen! I think most will be pleased. 😊

This is a book about a trio of kids that go on a magical adventure. The reason I chose the book is because it is narrated by Jim Dale, the guy who narrated the Harry Potter books in the USA. He's my favorite and can bring the characters to life!
The book was fun and is suitable for families.

A 'different' type of fantasy
Revisado: 07-12-16
I really like this series. It's a little reminiscent of Harry Potter, in that its about kids with extraordinary abilities go to a 'special' academy, deal with sinister teachers or students and have mysterious adventures. But there's something different about it.
The city is unnamed. So it doesn't take place in London or NYC or any known city (or even country) that I recall.
The mythos is different from most fantasy magical books as well. It may be set against a Welsh mythology or blended with elements of african or Celtic legends, I don't know. But Harry Potter, it's not.
What it is, is fun. Nimmo has developed a backstory all her own where all of the 'endowed' children...the ones with special abilities... are descended from one legendary king. Some are good, some are not, all are in a struggle for power even if they don't realize it.
Like most fantasy novels there are magical creatures and artifacts to be encountered. But these are different. Intelligent cats, a kid that can talk to animals, and sinister relatives who dress and act like ... well, like witches! Though I don't recall any of the cauldron stirring, broom riding variety...nor even modern day Wiccans.
And there are consequences in some cases to using their powers. Unlike some novels where kids cast spells willy nilly, often the abilities some have here are portrayed almost as a disability. Imagine having to live in the dark all the time because your 'endowment' causes light bulbs to explode...whether you want them to or not! You probably wouldn't be invited to many parties.
One thing I'd caution about though is, for me, the characters sometimes lacked depth and warmth that you might find in some novels. While certainly not cardboard cutouts (these characters are unlike any I've read about), I came away not really identifying with Charlie or any of the others. Charlie doesnt seem to have any hobbies or interests. What is his favorite meal? Does he like sports? There are animals in the story but does Charlie like them? Dislike them? Merely use them as a tool or just ignore them?
But...its still a good story and the narration was excellent! I really enjoyed the work Beale put into this and look forward to hearing more from him.
Give this book a listen though. Its fun.
