The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

Ending way too abrupt and too many loose ends
Revisado: 02-15-23
Sooo, I love this series. I'm really disappointed in how it looks like the author just kind of said "I'm done now" after writing 15 books and leaving so much unsaid. If this weren't the last book in the series, it might get a 4. Still a good read, just don't expect to be happy with how it all ends so quickly.

It's a dude reading a book
Revisado: 11-29-22
Why they didn't go with Peter Joyce for the Demonwae and Chaoswar sagas, I don't know. This is just a dude reading a book. Very little variation in character voices and his narration style is boring. The story itself is fantastic, but the narration has me fearing for when he takes over again during the Chaoswar.

Amazing story, music detracts in many places
Revisado: 09-10-22
Title says it all. It's just as good as I remember it being when I read it. The performance is great as well. My only gripe is that the music takes me away from my "mind picture" of what's going on as I spend time thinking about the music playing. In some places, it's also pretty corny. In others, it's appropriate. It's just too frequent.
Great book overall, will continue purchasing the rest of the series!

Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. At once humorous, romantic, and sad, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. This fresh edition, by award-winning translator Edith Grossman, brings the tale to life as never before.

Great for its time, now a bit wordy
Revisado: 09-06-22
Seeing as how this was written in 1600, or thereabouts, the novel is excellent. As a recommendation for others to listen though, it's quite wordy and dry a decent bit, so you may lose focus if listening while you do other things. It's no Count of Monte Cristo, but there are definitely other books that are not as good as this.

This is a fun book. Anyone complaining about it probably got bored because they weren't invested enough in the support characters. I'd definitely buy it again.

This was written by a child...
Revisado: 07-09-22
This book feels like it was written by someone who has no real social experience with people in life and they're making fun of themselves throughout. Many of the topics are childish and cringe to the point of my having to stop listening for my sanity. The female characters are super-stereotyped and annoying af. The story isn't very interesting, and it seemed like the author was grasping for ideas (on the first book), so everything seemed half thought out.
The narrator was ok, but was also not very interesting. The inflections, tone of voice, etc, lent to the madness instead of helping temper it.
As a comparison, listen to Dungeon Crawler Carl, the differences are quite clear, and I would rate that a 4.5 out of 5. Understand, I have listened to many LitRPG books, and hundreds of fantasy. This is one of the worst, right up there with Skyler Grant's garbage. Don't waste your money on this, unless you're looking for a kids book that isn't necessarily for kids.

Historia
Long, long ago, the Gods forged Twelve Swords of Power, each with a unique and deadly quality. They forged too well, for the swords could kill the Gods themselves. Then the swords were lost, scattered across the land; and many are they, both good and evil, who are desperate to find them again. This story is of Farslayer, the sword that can kill from across an entire world. The game is fierce; the prize is the sword.

Huge step back for narration
Revisado: 06-19-22
Sadly, the narration is emotionless and very measured. Similar to a march to the beat of drums. Couldn't finish it. Great book though, I read it once and remember that. Too bad, the last narrator wasn't great, but a major step up from this one.

The recording is messed up and 'muffled'
Revisado: 06-17-22
The book itself is classic Fred Saberhagen, well written with plenty of 'fancy words'....problem is that the person that recorded this one screwed it up and it's significantly more.....muffled, or underwater sounding than the previous books. I can't give his performance a good review, because the difference between book 2 and 3 is pretty obvious.

The best entry yet!
Revisado: 05-27-22
While Matt Dinniman has created an amazing, smart, funny and horrifically wonderful IP in Dungeon Crawler Carl, I can't stress enough Jeff Hays'/Soundbooth Theater's role in this masterpiece. I have listened to many an audio book, and I have yet to find another narrator that provides the same level and quality of performance that Soundbooth Theater provides....and its by a longshot. If you have well whisky and top shelf, Soundbooth Theater is Pappy Van Winkle (another tier entirely), but there's enough for everyone! I truly, honestly believe that Jeff has an equal hand in evoking the various emotions I've felt while I listen and, without his participation, it would be a lesser production. Thank you Jeff for what you do....truly. I follow the studio's releases now independently of any author.
That being said, Matt, PLEAAAAAASE KEEP TAKING MY MONEY. Basically as much as you can make merch for. I want this series in physical form, I want a donut stuffed animal, I want a dungeon crawler carl lunchbox dammit! This is, by far, one of the best series, and books I've read this decade, I think because of the honesty and no-bs way that he writes everyone. I feel like I'm being supremely entertained without smoke being blown up my....anyway, any amazing feeling you can conjure in your mind will probably be tickled by this book and you should buy it....but first buy the other 4 if you haven't already.
