Historia
Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough - who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974. Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one 40 years old. But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on.

I can listen to the whole series over and over! I disagree with those who feel it it too long.

Jumbled accents and bad politics
Revisado: 03-05-22
The premise of the book sounded great. Who doesn’t love a good pandemic story? But the red flags started when Gold tried to imagine what British politicians would do in such a scenario. That was made worse by the awful jumbled up accents that Price was throwing at us. Is it Irish? Scottish? Klingon? Utter chaos!
Also, any decent diplomat or international relations connoisseur hasn’t used the term “third world country” in decades. A 2015 book should reflect that. The right term is “developing countries”.
Oh, and an intelligent female scientist couldn’t resist having a girly crush on the hot president and telling us aaaaall about her thoughts?
A Republican president worried about ethnic diversity in a scientific team? Give me a break. That is suspending reality way too much!

Historia
I played all those cool video games. I watched all those movies. I even read the books. In most of 'em, the hero shoots the bad guys, drives a sweet car, never gets hungry, and always seems to get laid by the end. Yeah. Whatever. I gotta be straight with you about why I wrote this journal, and it comes down to one thing, the apocalypse kinda sucks. It doesn’t meet my expectations at all.

Hilarious and so very dark!
Revisado: 02-10-22
Can other reviewers stop adding spoilers to their reviews?? I also don't know why some feel the need to add a synopsis. There is already one for every book on Audible.
Regarding this book: Hilarious with a ton of grumpiness and some really dark moments. I had to skip most of chapter 52. Waaay too much ranting for me, even though I agree with Dusty's (well justified) grumpy words. The pace picks up midway through the story and I found myself not only laughing out loud at all the nonsense but also wishing books 2 and 3 were on Audible (hint, hint).

Oversimplification
Revisado: 02-10-22
There is a lot of information to unpack on this one. And also a lot of judgement and personal opinions passed as unquestionable truths. If you truly want to explain the true reason ISIS, ISIL or Daesh men chose to use terror as their weapon of choice, interviewing them would have been the way to go. Do you believe the author did that part of the research?
The only “reason” for violence I heard is the stuff that the same media he criticizes in several chapters spews without in-depth knowledge of their system.
I believe the first step to beat an enemy is to get in their heads and really understand their reasons THEN address those reasons. Knee jerk reactions will never make this nightmare go away.
I am sorry Bronson Pinchot had to read this one.

Not too bad
Revisado: 02-02-22
The book is entertaining albeit very predictable. Having that said, the story was good enough to keep me listening until the end. Some of the side stories are there just to illustrate the effects of EMP to people without imagination or Google. Overall it is not a book about EMP. It is a modern "Independence Day" without Will Smith as the hero.

Skip the Teenage Drama
Revisado: 02-02-22
I listened to the entire book because it helped pass the time but I will confess I skipped about 95% of the teenage drama, which sounded unrealistic and unnecessary as far as the storyline goes.
Also, someone who names a daughter Rochelle can hardly make fun of someone who names their dog Moogie.

As flat as a crepe
Revisado: 01-31-22
This book reads as a sanitized script for a TV show. The characters are so predictable that I found myself speaking out loud what they would do next and guessing right. The bad guys are cringe-worthy, not because they are doing evil things, but because they are ridiculously obvious and one-dimensional. Elliott, the former military guy who suffers from PTSD, is just a walking prepper's manual, and his flat companions are there solely to represent the "naive" readers. The dialogues were comical, not because of intended humor, but because they all (including young women and little girls) sounded like they spoke like a 60-year old man, using old-timer idioms. Also, who wouldn't grab a coat while escaping New York on January 1st?? Seriously?
In case the author ever reads this, I must say I admire anyone who can write a book, as I don't think I would have the patience to sit down and do the same. I just wish there was much more depth and dimension to human emotions in a story about a post-apocalyptic world.
One thought about the narration: it was not great, but my bar is really high (Jim Dale), so I guess Kevin Pierce did alright.
I did finish the whole audiobook because I was doing manual work over the weekend and it was more like background noise, but I regret spending 1 credit on this one.

Great listen while driving
Revisado: 01-30-22
This is a great story to listen to as a pastime. The pace is intense from the beginning, which helps you feel engaged and entertained. I couldn’t relate to the main character, but that doesn’t make it a bad book like other reviews suggested. I think it is just a difference in attitude towards life.
Also, out of curiosity, why are all main characters in post-apocalyptic books either men in their 30s or women in their 20s?? I am yet to find one with other demographics. Mine (women, 30-45) usually gets relegated to being the side-kick who needs to be protected.
