Waste of a Credit
Revisado: 09-26-24
This is a short story not a book and only an hour and a half long. Not worth a credit. There is
very little that makes it a Hamish Macbeth book other than some familiar characters at the very beginning and very end. Furthermore the voice of the narrator reading as Hamish sounds like an old man.

Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women is the story of Brooks’ intrepid journey toward an understanding of the women behind the veils, and of the often contradictory political, religious, and cultural forces that shape their lives. In fundamentalist Iran, Brooks finagles an invitation to tea with the ayatollah’s widow—and discovers that Mrs. Khomeini dyes her hair.

Interesting Snapshot of Islamic Women
Revisado: 09-21-18
Various stories about different Islamic women encountered by the author while she was working as a reporter in the Middle East. Some are surprising and it becomes clear that the culture and country greatly affect how woman are treated. There is some background about Mohammed's wives. I enjoyed the stories but this is read by the author and I found her voice and accent difficult for listening.

Audio Can Be Confusing - This Might Help
Revisado: 09-21-18
I have read several of Sujata Massey's Rei Shimura novels and enjoyed them so this title interested me. It is a mystery but more like a novel, very rich in historical detail. I learned quite a bit about the positions of Parsi and Muslim women in India in the 1920's. There was one problem, which is that I found it difficult to keep track of the various characters whose names are unfamiliar so I took the book out of the library and I am including a list here so you can use it as a cheat sheet.
Perveen Mistry is the main character. Her circle includes:
- Jamshedji - Her father
- Camillia - Her mother
- Mustafa - Butler
- Jayanth - Young stevedore client of the law firm
- Rustom - Brother
- Gulnaz - Sister-in-law
Farid Household
-Omar Farid - deceased husband
-Faisal Mukri - the estate trustee and agent
-Razia Fared - First wife, one daughter Amina
- Sakina Fared - Second wife, two daughters, one son
-Mumtaz Fared- Third wife
- Mohsen - Servant - widowed with two young children also working as servants, Fatima and Zeid
Hope this helps. The book is an enjoyable listen!

Not Quite What I Expected
Revisado: 11-05-17
I wasn't too keen on reading about a white girl captured by Indians but it was for book club so I thought I would listen. It was not exactly what I expected. The narration was excellent and I think that in this case, listening would be better than reading. The main story is really about Captain Kidd, the newsreader, and Joanna is the secondary story. It is told in his voice. I found the description of Texas after the Civil War to be a mix of the wildness we see on television and a degree of sophistication. Now that I think about, for those who are old enough to remember, similar to some of the story lines in "Have Gun Will Travel". This book did not manipulate the reader, just told the story and let you decide how you felt. I am recommending it to everyone.

Mixed Bag
Revisado: 05-27-16
This book seems to be collection of essays so material is repeated and the essays do not seem to be in chronological order. Despite the author's insistence that it is not about Parkinson's disease, a good bit of it is, but that's okay. Where he really lost me was the last chapter. Perhaps it was a joke I didn't get but his over generalizations about the generations and ultra liberal views on health care, Social Security and taxes had me screaming at the recording. And by the way, people do pay taxes on dividends and interest, along with real estate taxes so it is not all just capital gains. I really wish I had the written book so I could make sure I heard it right, but it is certainly not worth listening to again.

Historia
There isn't much fun in the sun when a billionaire real estate tycoon is found murdered on the Tilt-a-Whirl at a seedy seaside amusement park in the otherwise quiet summer tourist town of Sea Haven. John Ceepak, a former MP just back from Iraq, has just joined the Sea Haven police department. The job offer came from an old Army buddy who hoped to give Ceepak at least a summer's worth of rest and relaxation to help him forget the horrors of war. Instead, Ceepak will head up the murder investigation.

Broke the rules
Revisado: 09-28-15
Despite a cute setup as a cozy, this story breaks the rules. The initial death is violent, but that is okay. The solution to the mystery is one that may offend listeners, including this one, who thought it was a nice, pleasant listen.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-20-15
I should have read the reviews first because I agree. Little new information here. Basically, we all only have so much self control and when we use it up, we have less. Duh. This does not measure up to the normally excellent Great Courses.

Historia
The Addictive Brain is a fair and balanced investigation of addiction, backed by hard science and behavioral science. Most of us have probably seen the old antidrug commercial in which an actor compares your brain on drugs to an egg sizzling in a hot frying pan. That's a powerful image, but it doesn't tell us what actually happens when drugs enter your body and interact with neurochemical processes.

Excellent course with some caveats
Revisado: 08-20-15
I thought this a good introduction to addictions. The lectures covered caffeine, nicotine, marijuana, uppers and opiates. He also briefly talks about other possible addictions such as gambling, but not about food addictions or shopping, etc. The reason for the slight downgrade is because most of the scientific discussion of the brain went over my head. That said, I still thought it was a good purchase and an interesting course.

Not Tina Fey
Revisado: 08-20-15
I bought this book because I enjoyed Tina Fey's book "Bossypants". I thought the books would be similar but they are not. Tina Fey's book was funny and I felt like she was in the car with me telling stories. Amy Poehler's book seemed more like a performance and not a very funny one at that. No laugh out loud moments, at least for me.

Historia
Feisty Dr. Siri Paiboun is no respecter of persons or party; at his age he feels he can afford to be independent. In this, the second novel in the series, he travels to Luang Prabang, where he communes with the deposed king who is resigned to his fate: it was predicted long ago. And he attends a conference of shamans called by the Communist Party to deliver an ultimatum to the spirits: obey party orders or get out.

Good Series
Revisado: 05-22-15
My husband and I both enjoy this series and listen to it when we are in the car together. It is set in Laos, with a slightly disillusioned Communist as the protagonist. Throw in a bit of magic and spirits and there you have it, a very different type of cozy.
