Fun book, narration lacking

This is a fun cozy mystery series...not too deep or challenging, but still engaging, with fun characters and subplots that often overshadow the mystery itself. But it works. My only real issue is with the narrator...she reads the story well, and narrates the female characters in a very natural tone. Yet somehow, when she gets to lines from a male character, ANY male character, she suddenly turns into that kid in the Junior High play that can't act for anything, but got the part because there was literally no one left to play it. The narrator suddenly becomes stunted, and over-pronounces EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. A simple line like, "Where are you heading, Sloan?" in a male voice suddenly becomes "WHERE...ARE...YOU...HEADING.
... ... SLOAN?" It's very distracting, and does detract considerably from what is otherwise an enjoyable, laid-back cozy mystery.

I have been a Ruth Ware fan for quite some time. She is great with a slow build, and brutal with the plot twists. I've read all of her books as audiobooks, all read by Imogen Church, and normally I really enjoy her performance. This one was NOT Imogen Church's best. Her portrayal of lead character Hannah made her mousey, timid, and frankly unlikable. All the men were read like frat boys named Biff, and our victim, April, sounded like she was delivering bad lines from a porno movie with everything she said.

Unlike Ruth Ware's other brilliant mysteries, this one left me scratching my head a few times. Normally, Ware's characters are right there with the reader, in terms of plot developments. With this one, details were being clearly revealed, and the characters were much slower to pick up, which made it frustrating as the reader, and made the characters seem dense. Also, certain choices by the characters seemed rather stupid...why would the hero traverse the countryside to show up at the last possible second to save the day, and NOT call the police??

Worth the read, but not my favorite of hers.

This is an absolutely engaging and heartbreaking story...not normally my type of book, but I couldn't tear myself away. Although I could see early on how the mystery would unfold, it was still very well-written, and still contained a few surprises. My only issue was with the narration...the narrator struggled with phrasing when doing certain accents, which became somewhat distracting. Other than that little point, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recommend this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This was my first time doing an audiobook, and it was a great place to start. It got a tiny bit sluggish in the middle, due to a bit of over-explaining on some details, but overall I totally enjoyed the many 80s pop culture references...I was a teenager in the 80s, so a lot of this brought back some fun memories, but it was also integrated into the plot as well. There were also several twists that I didn't see coming. Overall, I highly recommend this book.
