Historia
When Frieda Hughes moved to a ramshackle estate in the wilds of Wales, she was expecting to take on a few projects: planting a garden, painting, writing her poetry column for The Times (London), and possibly even breathing new life into her ailing marriage. But instead, she found herself rescuing a baby magpie, the sole survivor of a nest destroyed in a storm—and embarking on an obsession that would change the course of her life.

If you love, someone, set them free
Revisado: 01-20-24
I was completely enthralled, listening to the author, read her words, describing her relationship to George, her magpie, I especially related to how she described George’s growing freedom as ventured forth, exploring the world outside the kitchen window. Coincidentally, my husband had just died three weeks before I started reading this book. He had been very sick and his death was a form of his spirit being set free, I couldn’t help but make a parallel between George taking out through that window, this idea gave me great peace, maybe the same kind of peace that the author felt as George flew to his freedom.

Historia
The Whip is inspired by the true story of Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love with a runaway slave and had his child. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track the killer. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver for Wells Fargo, during the renowned California 'gold rush' days. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her.

Best books I’ve read this year
Revisado: 11-05-22
As I read this book I entered the world of the characters, and left my every day life. This is exactly the kind of escape I need at the point in my life. It’s a compelling story about an amazing woman who faced seemingly insurmountable challenges. Charlie Parker was decades ahead of her time. Very inspirational, particularly to women facing some of life‘s greatest challenges.

Well researched historical detail
Revisado: 10-26-20
Ken Follett has done it again. This deeply researched historical novel makes this time in human history come alive. The characters are alive in your mind Zai and as you read this book you find yourself existing in the world with the characters.
Now I find that I want to begin over again with that whole series and continue enjoying The richly portrayed story of this time so long ago. This is a fabulous book and I highly recommend it to one and all.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Gripping and Totally Immersive! Wow!
Revisado: 12-09-19
I am only pages away from finishing this book and I do not want it to end! Margaret Atwood has written a masterpiece, the perfect sequel to The Handmaid's Tale. The narrators nail it, especially, Aunt Lydia. The actor who plays her in the TV series "The Handmaid's Tale" reads the 'Aunt Lydia' parts and I found her narration to be especially compelling.
My favorite books are ones in which you enter a world, and remain there even when you put the book down. This certainly is one of those. This effect is intensified for me given the current pontifical climate and news clips, sound bites and tweets I hear of every day..
Margaret Atwood is sounding an alarm bell for our current political reality in a powerful fictional story that is deeply satisfying.

Great plotting with surprising twists
Revisado: 02-21-18
What really stands out for me in this book Are the great plot twists and surprises the author presents. That’s what makes this book so much fun to read. The author also raises important questions about what exactly makes a mother. Is a mother the person who gives biological birth to a child or is a mother a person who does the every day work, the caring the feeding the nurturing. As an adopted child myself I have always considered my true mother to be the mother who raised me and her love to me every day. So I was disturbed at some of the conclusions the author draws. However I’m giving this book 5 stars because it is very thought-provoking, it is so well written, the characters are just very true, and it is well worth reading.

Great insight into the time. Shows great character development about a complicated topic of racism. Good marks on the family saga genre too
