Narrator again excellent in capturing the nuances of Smith’s character and his dry humour. Story kept my interest throughout. Ending leaves some unanswered questions.

Confusing
Revisado: 04-25-21
Slow and somewhat confusing, littered with red herrings and well padded. Finished it with feeling of relief rather than satisfaction. John Lee narration somewhat grating on the ear after a while.

Narration too fast and quite “flat” much of the time. Story itself rather tedious; characters two dimensional. Have up after first 2 hours.

Historia
It is 1941. Wolfgang Stahl, an American spy operating undercover as an SS officer, has just fled Germany with Hitler's henchmen on his trail. He is carrying valuable cargo - the blueprint of the Führer's secret plan to invade Russia. Stahl's man in the American embassy, the shy and sheltered Calvin M. Cormack, is teamed with a boisterous MI5 officer, Walter Stilton, to find the spy and bring him to safety. Their investigation takes them across war-torn London, from the shelled-out blocks to the ubiquitous pubs to the underground counterfeiting shops; and in Cormack's case, into the arms of Kitty, his partner's rambunctious daughter.

Thank God that's over.....
Revisado: 12-01-18
Too long and too slow.
Ploughed on to the end thanks in part to the narrator who tried his best.
None of the characters were either very engaging nor were they or their behavior very credible to me.
Kept going because .....well, it's Tana French - a hugely talented writer . With anyone else, would have given up after the first third.
But in the end I have to conclude that, like French's "A Secret Place", it's another big disappointment.

Gripping first novel, well developed characters, credible and well paced plot and great sense of place. Style is similar to Tana French for those who enjoy her novels also set in Ireland. And Aoife McMahon shows how great narration is done and can really add so much!

Ludicrously contrived
Revisado: 02-04-18
Another well narrated Jefferson Tayte mystery, this one with a plot that unfortunately borders on the ludicrous. Alice’s various actions in the face of an eloborate spying plot against Britain involving her family just don't seem at all credible and the whole narrative structure crumbles as a result. Pity - the historical context (Empress of Ireland) is very interesting and real.
