Historia
When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

Still an excellent read
Revisado: 10-18-24
This had been on my want to read list for at least 40 years. I finally read it since I was planning a backcountry trip to remote parts of Canyonlands NP. Well written and humorous, much of it a historic timepiece considering how the area has changed A LOT since it was written. The reader is really good and captures Abbey’s personality (I saw Abbey speak many years ago) - however he mispronounced pinyon and Nevada throughout the book, Pinyon is pronounced pin-yin not pin-yown, Nevada is na-vah-duh not ne-vaw-duh

Great story

Intense but great story. Reader very good except the men all sound the same, but doesn’t detract from the overall quality.

Addictive
Revisado: 06-28-21
At first I was put off by RLJ speaking voice, but within a chapter or two I felt like I was listening to an old friend telling about their life. She’s very expressive in her performance.
Her life story is dramatic and interesting, I often craved to listen when I had other things to do. I love the song performances interspersed into the “reading.” I always wish we had the photos included from book versions, but audible has the benefit of her singing.

Love this series
Revisado: 02-11-18
This story wasn’t as good as others in the series. I love the series for Molly’s character, the historic references, Molly’s friends and husband Daniel. Other reviewers seem to hate him but I adore him and find he very much appreciates Molly for who she is and his sometimes overbearing attitudes are in keeping with the historical context and the fact that he’s a cop and does know the real dangers that exist. In the context of the era of these stories he is actually very enlightened.

Historia
Irish immigrant Molly Murphy and her New York City P.I. business are in the midst of a sweeping influenza epidemic and a fight for women’s suffrage that lands her in jail. Her betrothed, Police Captain Daniel Sullivan, finds her, but he hardly has time to bail her out, what with Chinese gangs battling for control of a thriving opium trade. The only consolation Molly can take from her vexing afternoon in the clink is that it made her some new friends among the Vassar suffragists - and brought her a pair of new cases.

Enjoyable series
Revisado: 01-16-18
I really enjoy this series and have become an addict of it. The performance is generally excellent, my only complaint is that most of the men’s voices sound the same. But that is hardly ever a problem with the story. Definitely would recommend for if you enjoy light hearted mysteries. I love the historical setting and mixing in some history in with the stories. I
