This book was excellent!!!
Revisado: 12-31-21
I hated for this book to end! The storyline was excellently written and the narration made it all the more enjoyable. Honestly, the narrator is mainly why I enjoyed the story so much. When a narrator is able to capture all characters’ personalities so well that I feel like I’m right there in the story seeing it happen as it unfolds, he or she is that good!!! Do yourself a favor and enjoy reading this one!

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

A struggle....
Revisado: 10-19-20
I wasted my credit on this book! I couldn’t force myself to continue to listen. The quiet part was all the nicknames ‘Sportcoat’, ‘Hot Sausage’, ‘Nicole Bag’, etc. seemed childish in nature. The story seemed to wander and meander like there was no point. A total waste of time and pointless, I couldn’t continue to listen and torture myself 😖

Ummm... I’m not sure...
Revisado: 04-30-20
I honestly wanted to really like this book but, there was so many confusing time period shifts that it was hard to keep up with the time period of when the story was occurring. However, I did like how the characters were developed, I could deal with that, but when the story shifted from present day to 1815, to 1976, to 2015, then back to 1832, I was lost. The only consistent thing that was excellent about the book was the narrator—he was stellar the entire time!!!

This book was... “meh, ok...”
Revisado: 04-07-20
I love reading/listening to books, but this one was “just ok” to me. I love all kinds of writing styles from various authors, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, to name a few. However, Maya Angelou got under my skin in this book. Sometimes I felt like she complicated the story using too much imagery and too many cumbersome words instead of just saying what she wanted to say plainly. I found myself rolling my eyes through most of the story and ultimately didn’t finish the last 2.5 hours because I got annoyed—I wanted to, but just couldn’t. It took me about three weeks to get through 7.5 hours, which is a first for me cause I love audiobooks, but this one was “meh..”.

Tew murch!!!
Revisado: 01-20-20
I’m a fan. However, the author did “tew murch” with this one. All the other books were great, with the exception of this one. A lot was done to make every character seem perfect like they were a “god” and then imperfect. The sex parts were over the top and they happened like every 10 mins. “ I mean people get a grip”! By the end there were too many unanswered questions left.

Historia
Sharla Cody is only five, but has already lived a troubled life - only to find herself dumped on an elderly neighbor's doorstep when her mother takes off for the summer. Although Sharla is not the angelic child Addy Shadd had pictured when she agreed to look after her, the two soon forge a deep bond. To Addy's surprise, Sharla's presence brings back memories of her own childhood in Rusholme, a town settled by fugitive slaves in the mid-1800s. She reminisces about her family, her first love, and the painful experience that drove her away from home.

I liked this story! I think I especially favored the drifting back and forth between the time periods. The world needs more people like Addy Shad, she was truly a special person in this story 😊

Absolutely amazing!!!!
Revisado: 12-05-19
If I could give this book more stars I would. It was absolutely good from start to finish! As a member of a historically black sorority I could related to the sisterhood on so many levels. Several characters became favorites of mine, of course, Miss Pearl, but also Haynes and for sure Cali. Haynes' non-sense approach was rewarding and Cali's pursuit of justice was refreshing. Of course the outcome was great, but hard to believe that people change overnight--in the end I'm glad that people like Lilith can change if they want to. Read this gem, you won't be disappointed :)

Great book!
Revisado: 12-02-19
Overall this was a great book. I will say at times it was hard to stay interested maybe because of the plot line. It was also hard to think of Harriet as having romantic feelings because she is almost always portrayed as a strong black serious woman; however, I think it was a nice caveat to what we’re used to from her. I would have love to meet her because she’s one of my favorite heroines.

Great story!
Revisado: 11-07-19
Although this was a good story, I have mixed feelings about the ending. I really didn’t like that the father was never brought to justice for his crimes. It was sickening to think that he got away with that for all those years, it made me mad. Overall a good read!
