Historia
Think you might be in a cult? Want to know the signs? Join Sarah Edmondson and Anthony “Nippy” Ames to talk about things that are..a little bit culty. Or in their case: a whole bunch of culty. As whistleblowers documented in the critically-acclaimed HBO series “The Vow,” Sarah and Nippy have a lot to say about their experience, and burning questions to ask people with similar stories. They’re here to help people understand, heal from, and avoid abusive situations one little red flag at a time. Listen in as they share their stories, have frank and unscripted conversations with other ...

Heavy subjects covered with realness.
Revisado: 12-24-22
Sara and Nippy cover some really heavy stuff, and come from a place of knowing. The guests and topics are always handled with care, the hosts are not afraid to show emotion, and yet there is always at least one good laugh to be had. Yes, they use adult language, but the avenues they walk down aren't Sesame Street, so I feel they've definitely earned the right. (Maybe we should have a drinking game a la the Fair Game podcast, where we drink every time one of the hosts curses? Just a thought.) Hard topics, covered with humour and heart, while giving listeners a great, first-person education. If you've not listened before, it's worth the time to binge the episodes from the beginning, as I did.

Historia
“Sam, could you do me a favor?” Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

This story gives a unique perspective on an old story. Hearing about Gacy from his defense lawyer puts a refreshingly different spin on things.

Historia
Serial killers: Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer are often the first names that spring to mind. Many people assume serial killers are primarily an American phenomenon that came about in the latter part of the 20th century. But such assumptions are far from the truth. Serial killers have been around for a very long time and can be found in every corner of the globe - and they're not just limited to the male gender either. Some of these predators have been caught and brought to justice whereas others have never been found, let alone identified.

I have but one gripe...
Revisado: 11-29-21
and it's not even a gripe, really. The material is fascinating, it's very accessible to the layman, and Manning's personality shines through. It was a pleasant surprise to hear that Bronson Pinchot was doing the reading, but I found his voice so soothing that I had to set up tasks for myself whilst I listened. Otherwise, I'm afraid I'd have fallen into a pleasant slumber. Which causes this insomniac to ask: Mr. Pinchot, would you please come over to my house and read me stories at bedtime?

Heartbreaking and honest.
Revisado: 10-17-21
This was a tough listen, but necessary for me in my own processing of Tony's suicide. I only met the man once, but he was kind to me and made time for me that he didn't need to do. Even that one tiny encounter gave me so much more esteem for him than I'd previously had. I miss his voice. Hearing about him through his friends and colleagues was difficult and perfect. Thank you to everyone who participated, to Laurie for taking on the task, and to whomever his assistant was that day in late 2005 who told a pink-haired girl at the bar in Les Halles, "He'll be going out for a smoke in a few minutes. You should go join him." I am grateful to you all.

His practical mother has caught glimpses of terrors but refuses to believe - too focused on keeping the family from falling apart. And his eldest sister, the dramatic and vulnerable Sydney, won't admit to seeing anything but the beckoning glow of the spotlight...until it swallows her up. Noah Turner sees monsters. Fantastic.
Revisado: 09-22-21
This autobiography-in-progress is a fascinating look at a rock star and how he got to that place. It starts in a somewhat startling fashion, but good stories often do. Rick hooked me in from the start. I imagine that I would tear through this is I was reading it in print, but do yourself a favor and listen instead. Hearing Rick laugh, hold back tears, and throw in amusing asides is well worth your time. I would love to have this man to a small dinner party, because his story is complex and he's brutally honest about himself. If you're ever back in Duluth MN, Rick, look me up. I'll cook for you and your band, and all you have to bring is your genuine self.

Historia
Richard Marx is one of the most accomplished singer-songwriters in the history of popular music. His self-titled 1987 album went triple platinum and made him the first male solo artist (and second solo artist overall after Whitney Houston) to have four singles from their debut crack the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was an even bigger smash, going quadruple platinum and landing two singles at number one.

A must-listen
Revisado: 08-28-21
I've been a casual fan of Richard Marx since "Don't Mean Nothin' ", and have followed his on Twitter for years. When I saw this book on Audible, I used a precious credit to obtain it. WORTH IT. His snark, wit, honesty, and self-awareness are all on display here along with reverence and irreverence in abundance. There is no other performer that could have done it justice, so I'm thrilled that it was Richard himself who read it to me. I made it through all but the last 50 minutes of the book in one shot because I couldn't bring myself to hit Pause. This is a fantastic performance and well worth the time spent.

Historia
In The Angel Of Darkness, Caleb Carr brings back the vivid world of his bestselling The Alienist but with a twist: this story is told by the former street urchin Stevie Taggert, whose rough life has given him wisdom beyond his years. Thus New York City, and the groundbreaking alienist Dr. Kreizler himself, are seen anew. It is June 1897. A year has passed since Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline.
