Pleasantly surprised

Because of prior reviews and it’s availability on the plus catalog, we gave this one a shot. Plot is not original, but characters are interesting. Protagonist is likable, relatable and doesn’t fall into the glaring pitfalls too often encountered in this genre. The Dublin setting, and the narrators’ pleasant Irish accents, kept me intent and more focused on the story than I would have been had it been in USA or England. “Edgar Award finalist 2019” is deserved.

This series should come with a warning label like an additive pain killer: very bad for you and highly addictive.
The story of our heroine (secretly in love with herself, her secret boyfriend, and the prince, secretly) manipulating her way around more powerful, popular or pretty candidates to be chosen the One. Divided into a trilogy.
Narrator’s sappy, whispery delivery will trigger involuntary eye rolls and gag reflex. Lily’s “poison for young brains” review is on point; misogynistic, narcissistic, cliched, and awkward.
I listened to the whole series. More than once. It helps me fall asleep.
