Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Vulgar Young Adult fiction
Revisado: 11-30-24
I can’t recommend this as an audiobook, might be tolerable as a read. The narration really brings it down, their voice causes me physical discomfort.
The story is very mid and written in the voice of a vulgar young adult novel, “my first squat on the toilet as emperor, my first wipe as emperor, my first F-bomb as…” and so on.

Bob Johansson didn't believe in an afterlife, so waking up after being killed in a car accident was a shock. To add to the surprise, he is now a sentient computer and the controlling intelligence for a Von Neumann probe. Bob and his copies have been spreading out from Earth for 40 years now, looking for habitable planets. But that's the only part of the plan that's still in one piece.

boring, childish

Nothing happens. A nerd clones his personality (ie it gets worse), watches humanoid aliens hump and reintroduces alcoholism to human refugees. The end.

Historia
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

So much better than other franchise lit
Revisado: 09-04-24
I was shocked how well this free book was written. It’s 10x better than the insufferable fan-service pablum one finds with the Aliens franchise, for instance.
Very nice find.

Historia
This ALIEN story begins where most end: with a xenomorph loose on a damaged spaceship hurtling through space. Once a highly decorated marine, Chris Temple, a recently widowed single father to two young daughters, Jane, 11, and Emma, 8, is onboard. Despite his particular set of skills, Chris doesn’t get involved in the fight with the alien, instead focusing on keeping his children safe as the ship comes in for a crash landing.

Very bland, dumb with no high spots
Revisado: 08-04-24
The main character just punches problems, all the antagonists are cookie cutter drunken gorillas from a Western saloon. Makes AI fic look not so bad.
Nothing stands out, except when the author puts words in a military man’s mouth, it’s just a stream of barely related verbiage like LaForge spouting techno babble in TNG.

Revisado: 12-20-23
Don’t bother, even if it’s free. Reddit copy pasta tier writing. The voice acting had me slapping my earbuds out of my head like a hornet was buzzing me. The only good thing I can say is that the least interesting chapters (“Now”) can be skipped easily.

Historia
In 2204, humanity is expanding into the wider galaxy in leaps and bounds. Cutting-edge technology of linked jump gates has rendered most forms of transportation - including starships - virtually obsolete. Every place on Earth, every distant planet humankind has settled, is now a step away from any other. And all seems wonderful - until a crashed alien spaceship of unknown origin is found on a newly located world 89 light-years from Earth, carrying a cargo as strange as it is horrifying. To assess the potential of the threat a high-powered team is dispatched to investigate. But one of them may not be all they seem....

If it ain’t free don’t bother
Revisado: 10-03-23
Skip all chapters not having to do with the assessment team, that’s about 2/3rds of the book. Do that and you’ll have something slightly better than road noise on your next commute.
Nothing ultimately interesting happens, the world building is ‘meh’ and the whole novel is just a hook (ends with an ungratifying reveal) for the sequel.
Competently written but it (and the reader) suffers from the same filler nonsense as most fiction these days.
Look at all content as if you were paying for the value of each word as entertainment, because you are. This book is 2/3rds filler, pay accordingly.

The bastard offspring of They Live and The Day the Earth Stood Still, as told by Jean Paul Sartre. Shape-changing aliens may have landed on the White House lawn and subsequently integrated into human society, but humanity is still full of self-centered and self-absorbed individuals. The whole story is them fixing a ship, nothing else. Full stop. The story goes nowhere.
Tedious is all I can say about it.
Written and acted competently, but the story boring and frustratingly confined.
