Overly complicated
Revisado: 03-07-25
Did not like this book…. Too technical; not sure what the point was except water fasting. Leans heavily toward evolution, not creation. Chef AJ did a great job with narration, but would not recommend.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Angela's ashes??
Revisado: 07-21-21
Interesting but nothing about Angela's ashes...I don't get it. Swearing was unpleasant to hear, too much swearing. Did not enjoy this book.

Historia
In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only 29 years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with an incompetent defense attorney and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in despairing silence.

So glad I listened to this book!!
Revisado: 04-26-20
This is one of the most amazing books I've ever read/listened to; so glad I choose it and highly recommend to everyone. The narration was great, actually it was excellent! In spite of every terrible thing he went through, it's not a depressing story and amazingly, Anthony Ray Hinton never lost his sense of humor! This was Oprah's book of the year in 2018 but it's my book of the year in 2020!

Revisado: 11-17-19
The book and information is good but the narration is the worst I've ever heard!! She speaks slowly and hesitatingly...hard to listen...thankfully, it's a short book.

Historia
As elegant as the Sacramento residence she operates, Isabelle Labrie keeps her past concealed, like the treasure she hides under the Golden Hotel. It's 1853, the heyday of the California Gold Rush. Isabelle is full of hope, staking her claim on the city's refined clientele and her future on a sweetheart's promise to marry her when he returns from the gold fields. Then, unexpected guests - fugitive slaves seeking safe passage to the North - force her to confront her past and reconsider her path.

Great story!!
Revisado: 09-19-19
Wow! I enjoy audio books of this genre, i.e., 1850's. I zipped through this audio book; sometimes it was a little difficult to keep up with the characters, i.e., who was who but overall, it was a very interesting story which was hard to put down. If you like stories about the evils of slavery and the people working to abolish it, you will like this audiobook.

Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction. Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

What an amazing story! It's one of the best books I've ever listened to. I'm fascinated with this time period and what people went through and endured...so much pain and hardship but victories too. This is a book I'd listen to again. It's a truly inspiring story.

Another winner by Catherine Ryan Hyde
Revisado: 08-07-18
I thought this was a fascinating book... a bit unreal as I really can't imagine this to be a true story (two girls walking for miles in open desert). but it was fiction, so I enjoyed it as such. And enjoy it, I did. I especially liked the character of Jen, the younger girl; she had such a good head on her shoulders and was more practical than Carly. The ending was satisfying and a happy one. Very good story as are all of Catherine Ryan Hyde's books.

Spellbinding. Heart wrenching at times. Excellent writing, excellent narration. Again, one of the very best books I've ever listened to. A satisfying ending. Well worth a credit.
