Historia
Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk.

Enjoyable Fantasy Read

Speeding up the reading to 1.15 speed was the magic needed to take this book from dragging to enjoyable for me.
Even with the sped up read, it took about an hour for the book to grab me.
It is very slow paced, but that’s not a bad thing. Definitely more reminiscent of Victorian and Edwardian fairy tales, which this book is set adjacent to.
I believe the protagonist is autistic-coded. I felt like she was done respectfully and well in that way. However, my ND is ADHD, so I may not be the best reviewer in that case.
I loved the side queer romance included so causally and matter of fact. That was a great inclusion, even if it wasn’t the main romance.
The main romance is a “slow burn,” which I abhor, but if you like that kind of thing, it should be great! (I read this for the fairies.)
I really enjoyed the well rounded list of characters. Several felt deeply dimensional. I also really appreciated how fairy were incorporated, their stories, and the scientific “dryadology” approach to the Fae being REAL and something to be SCIENTIFICALLY studied tickled my funny bone.
I very much enjoyed this book (once it sped up), and intend to get further books in the series.

Historia
An aura of mean-minded resentfulness is thick in the streets of Ankh-Morpork. Insurrection is in the air. The Haves and Have-Nots are about to fall out all over again. The Have-Nots want some of their own magic. But magic in the hands of amateurs is a dangerous thing. The City Watch is the last line of defence against such unnatural goings-on. But when even the Watch have trouble telling right from wrong, you know that law and order ain't what they used to be. But that's all about to change.

Simply LIVID I spent an entire credit on a TINY PORTION of the book! This is one of my favorite discworld books, and it’s not even half the story. WHY?!
